I don't know too much about them, though I've raised most everything else.

1. Everything I've read
says not to give anything salted to cats. But I was looking for recipes to make food for a cat dealing with a 5 month ear infection. I don't know if a one-time serving would hurt.

4. I think they have fairly sensitive kidneys...
Personally, I wouldn't do it. The no sodium beef broth in cans would probably be ok.

18. I understand...
I'm a dog person too but, I do have a kittie that I've had for 14 yrs so I must be doing something right. My mom has a cat, now worth over $4k from kidney dialysis. That's why I wouldn't chance it.

37. Maybe they passed out on us, anyway, a couple of weeks ago...
I'm lying here in bed asleep and I become aware of a "presence" on my chest. I felt four cold spots. This is strange since no one has lived here except me for years. I opened my eyes and there was a black cat looking me in the eyes.
I don't own a cat. I'm a combat vet, but I wasn't alarmed or anything, so I didn't move. My eyelids moving scared the cat though, and he ran off. I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to make friends with it, veeeeeerrrrryyyy slowly.

40. I figured it had to have been a pet sometime, so there is hope...
for it. That was very wierd, though, by the time my eyes fully opened it was lying down on me. It's slept on my bed the last couple of nights, so it is calming down.

8. You're right, lizziegrace. It's hard on their kidneys
and doesn't take much to affect them. Cats (and dogs) can go into renal failure from getting a good dose of salt...and good dose means not much since they are so much smaller than us.

Hi lizzie! :hi: :loveya:

11. I just wasn't sure if you were thinking treat,
or trying to coax a kitty who wouldn't eat or something. For a treat, as far as human foods go tuna is probably one of the treats most cats will go nuts for. Sardines too. My kitties also go crazy for a little sprinkle of shredded cheese, or a little bit of any meat I make for myself.

As far as treats and food made just for cats, Fancy Feast's new "Elegant Medleys" seem to be laced with drugs or something, because the cats will KILL for it.

12. For that matter, it's not great for humans either, because of the salt content.

I don't think it is harmful for a "now and then" thing, but definitely not a diet staple.

25. will it let you touch it at all?
If not, if it isn't tame yet, and you have a large cage or a spare room to keep it in, while you work on taming it, you can try trapping it. But you have to have a plan at that point, because trapping will initially stress it out, until you teach it that it's safe inside.

A Havahart trap with tuna or smelly seafood flavored canned cat food, with a towel draped over it for a bit of camoflage should do the trick. Then move it into a large cage with room for a litter box and a loft made out of a milk crate strapped to the top, with a cushion in it. Keep it in there and reach in to pet it often, always with treats in hand. A small room, like a spare bathroom could also work, but it might be too easy for it to avoid you in there. The best bet is to keep it somewhere where it has no choice but to let you pet it.

:loveya: to you for trying to find it a home.

47. I may have to bring this one to you, but I was hoping not to...
traumatise it with the trap before I got some of its trust back. I'm wondering if it remembers petting at all, or just won't accept it from me yet. It seems to be sleeping soundly at the end of my bed right now. It had to have been a pet at one time or another.
