Been using it for years now, since 4.10 or so. Easy to install, easy to use, for a while I even had some of the fancier interface things, like XGL and stuff, but while my computer can handle that type of stuff, it kinda slows it down a little.

some Windows desktops posted here, so I figured it might be in some theme that was used by one of the BSDs too.

Though I bet on Linux just because its more popular than BSD derivatives. The "home" directory though, was a dead giveaway, Windows doesn't have a home directory at all, and most Windows users, unless they are migrating from a Unix environment, wouldn't bother making a folder called "home". Though I knew it wasn't my particular distribution because mine calls the home directory on the desktop "Donald's Home".
