That's all I saw on the bikes in the same CC/price range. Plastic fenders, plastic trim, plastic crap. And not one of them came within 10mpg on the fuel economy, especially on the highway, which is where I ride.

I was looking at an 805cc Kawasaki, 800cc Suzuki and a 750cc Honda and their mileage ratings didn't come close to my 883cc Harley. And it does make published or better on gas mileage, I can get 57mpg or better on the highway (if I'll slow down enough :evilgrin: )

Actually, I'm happy you ride...I mean, actually ride. I work around a lot of Harley people here in Vegas and, with very few exceptions, they are not riders....you can tell from the way they handle their bikes that they are recent additions to the riding population and that they are not getting better at handling their bikes any time soon. They are true poseurs -- truly...they'll pose with their bikes, all together, for hours on end, just waiting for someone to come up to them -- and most probably bought the Harley (or, for some, the hyper-expensive custom choppers that're out now) as an accessory for their midlife crisis. I can guarantee they do not put in miles on the open road, most of them, or use the bikes for commuting or anyth8ing other than riding short distances to the established posing locations on the Vegas Strip. As someone who's ridden since age 11, and someone who treats motorcycles as serious transportation and not as toys, that rankles pretty severely. There're young sportbike poseurs in the vicinity, too, often...just like the Harley versions, that they may well grow up to become, their idea of riding a bike seems to be to rev the hell out of it in neutral, even when backing up. Stupid.

Harley Davidson caters to the whole 'image' thing, as company policy, and in doing so they saved the company (a few years back now) in a way that's used as case study for business majors in university. They didn't do their old riders any favors in doing so, though. They didn't do their new riders any good, either, I think, because there're a lot of people riding the biggest and heaviest bikes they make who have no business being aboard them. Then again, the same is true of young sportbike riders, who might use something like the Suzuki GSX-R ('Gixxer' -- seemingly the favored mount of 'squids') 750 or 1000 as a starter bike...half-naked kids taking their first rides on superbikes is just not a good scenario. I think it comes down to the uniquely American view of motorcycles as essentially toys...a very, very dangerous attitude.

About the "poseurs" out there. I get shit for riding a Sportster all the time instead of one of the "big bikes". I never let it bother me. I've been riding since I was about 9 and I can ride circles around all these posers without breaking a sweat.

I bought my '99 Sportster used with 15k miles on it and have put another 11k on it since. So far, I have changed the oil and filter at reegular intervals, changed the transmission oil and adjusted the primary chain. Nothing loose, nothing rattling and I have ridden the hell out of it. Mucho difference from the old oil leakers I rode "back in the day"
