6. i know tina turner attempted to cover it, but i do not acknowledge her efforts. |
|
i am no fan of CCR, but i do think that the song belongs to them, and any attempt to cover it will fall far short of its...proud mary-ness

8. Two entirely different approaches to the song |
|
But in the end I have to go with Creedence, because John wrote it. And besides, I can't hear Ike & Tina anymore without remembering what an abusive piece of shit Ike turned out to be.

Because it fits in with the style of so many of CCR's other hits. However, growing up I identified it with Ike and Tina Turner because theirs was the first version of the song that I heard, and until I knew Fogerty wrote it I had assumed Tina's was the original, probably because so many rock songs are covers of songs that were originally recorded by black R and B/soul artists. Both versions are cool in different ways, in my opinion.

36. Tina. Sorry CCR, Tina's the one who made it as well known as it is. :) |
|
At least in my opinion.
That, and as a bass, it's nice to have something I can actually sing along with. Ike may not have been a good singer or a good husband, but at least he put a nifty bass counterpoint in there that I can sing along with. :)
