Champagne suggestions?

I don't know anyting about them and need to buy a bottle for tomorrow night.
It can be California sparkling, cava or Italian.
Not too dry.

I would like to keep it under $35.

I particularly like Freixenet from Spain (I think?) - it's in the black bottle.

Korbel is good.

Both of those are around $10-12. There's a good Australian one called "Yellow" that's actually quite nice, too.


Stay the hell away from Andre or any of the Asti Spumante sugar drinks.

And since you don't want to spend more than $35, I can't recommend any actual Champagnes. And quite truthfully, as good as Veuve Clicquot is, I don't think it's worth the extra $35 above the cost of Freixenet.

The only reason why I tried it was because we share the same first name :D but it's actually pretty good. Not too dry, not too sweet and not too expensive. The World Market near me carries it.

I sell wine and that's one I recommend a lot. Very nice, very consistent and reasonably priced. I do like Veuve Clicquot but the Gloria Ferrer is head and shoulders above most of the others at that price range (12 - 14 dollars)

Excellent choice. Also has the name recognition that goes with it.

They are semi-sweet and go well with all types of food, plus they make great mimosas in the morning.

Gruet is fantastic!

The winemaker is French, and he's been in New Mexico long enough that the wine really good. I don't know how he does it at that price.


Have you encountered Armance B? It's about the same price from a guy named Fréderic Brochet near Poitiers in the Loire. Really delicious méthode wine.

If you don't want anything too dry, maybe a Blanc de Noir. It is almost a salmon color and pretty fruity (without tasting like a sugar cube.) Should be around $25 at a liquor store.

A Riche would also probably do fine, it is probably gonna sell for a little less than the Blanc de Noir, probably couple of dollars less. It isn't gonna have the same "pinkish" color but it may be slightly sweeter.


Don't let the snobs get to you! If you like it, then it is good wine!

My parents used to throw a st. pat's party where food and guinness were provided by us, but each guest was asked to bring a bottle of champagne or a jar of jelly for the home-made soda bread. I'd estimate that we had about 250 guests at its peak As a kid, it was my job to take coats and the gifts. Mom put me on special order to make sure that if someone brought a bottle of good champagne, that it not be put in the general collection used to make black velvet, as that would be a waste of something fine. We got a lot of Andre (made black velvets with it) a good amount of Korbel (people often drank it straight at the party) but I remember some attorney friends and the pastor's wife bringing White Star and other fine bottles. I hid those for the whole party.

26. We're fans of either the good stuff or cava

Cava's not bad if you're not flush, those drinking will accept a sparkling wine instead of Champagne, and you have several friends who'd like to have a few glasses along with you. We like Castellano.

When we're spending the money, we're going for Veuve Cliquot or Perrier-Jouet. We had a really nice Feuillatte last year. I'm not sure if we're opening the bottle of Veuve Cliquot we currently have tomorrow night. I'm thinking I may want to save it for January 20, 2009.
