Poll question: Best vocal group of the 1960s?
Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 01:29 PM by NightTrain
This poll concentrates on groups who specialized in vocal harmony. As such, it does not include the Beatles, Stones, Who, CCR, etc. They were all great bands, but vocal group harmony was not their main focus.

As always, feel free to write in your favorite if I neglected to include it!

ON EDIT: Added the Beach Boys. Duh! :eyes:

8. Vocals? The Mamas and Papas.
Great list to choose between, though Night Train.

I dig the Mamas and the Papas at "The Trip," Sunset Strip in L.A.
And they got a good thing goin' when the words don't get in the way.
And WHEN THEY'RE REALLY WAILING, MICHELLE AND CASS ARE SAILIN'.
Hey! they really nail me to the wall. --- Peter, Paul & Mary

14. Not a big M&Ps fan myself, but...
...I figured there'd be some folks around here who liked them. Hence their inclusion! ;)

9. U missed 4: Delfonics, Stylistics, Chilites AND Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell
Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 01:50 PM by seventhson
Any of these practcially blow the socks off the rest of your nominees.

In your list, though, the Tempatations are probably the tops in many respects. Eddie Kendricks is still a favorite of mine for all time. The Impressions and the the Miracles too (Curtis and Smokey).

This poll is too subjective. I thnk the delfonics are the most underrated and unappreciated.

Ahh - love in the sixties....

Favorite song - though -

"Just my Imagination" - still makes me cry for a lost or unfulfilled teenage love affair (Temptations)

and "If this world were mine" by Marvin and Tammy my "first" time . Yowch - whatta memory.

10. As a matter of fact, I didn't "miss" any of those acts.
<<Delfonics>>

One major hit in the '60s, "La-La Means I Love You." Second biggest hit didn't come until 1970.

<<Stylistics>>

Didn't record in the '60s. Earliest recordings, 1971.

<<Chilites>>

Recorded in the '60s, but made their best records from about 1971-74.

<<AND Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell>>

Duo, not a group.

22. My only problem with the Supremes...
Is that Flo and Mary were better singers than Diana.

Yet she sang lead.

21. I voted for the Four Tops.
But seriously -- no love for Smokey? Nobody voted for Smokey? Great googly moogly, y'all.

Regardless, Levi could sing rings 'round all the other lead vocalists in your list. And while Brian Wilson COULD be a great composer sometimes, his work was only as even as his mental state.

Put Levi Stubbs and Holland/Dozier/Holland together, and you've got Heaven.

33. Archie Bell and the Drells.
Hi, I'm Archie Bell, and these are the Drells; from Houston, Texas. And we not only sing, we dance just as good as we walk. Down in Houston, we got a brand new dance called the "Tighten Up." This is the music we tighten up with.
