2. You know, there are actually people in the world that have never had that?
And don't even know what Chicken Fried Steak is? It's so sad.

13. There was a place in my hometown that had the BEST in the world
They served up such great chicken fried steak :).. They pounded the daylights out of that round steak, and it was delectibly crunchy, yet juicy & tender.. yum... They had to serve the rest of the food on a side plate.. the steak was that large..

All three of my boys (when they were little) could fill up on ONE serving..

Sadly they are closed down now.. That place was in business for 50 years, and the "kids" did not want to keep the restaurant

22. *gasp*
You don't know what chicken fried steak is?! You need to come down south.

Basically, it is a thin beef cutlet, breaded and fried like fried chicken, hence the name. It is food of the gods, and heart attack on a plate.

24. You poor thing, Darth...
 You should come to the south and try it. I know that Chilis serves a WONDERFUL Chicken Fried Steak. They call it Country Fried STeak, but that's the same thing. Crispy breading, good steak...served with mashed potatoes and a corn on the cob. I just ate, but damn that sounds good.

25. BAH.. on Chili's... It USED to be good
but the last 3 times we tried it there , the gravy was AWFUL..

They have started putting so much pepper in it that it's terrible..

The first time we ate it after they "changed" it, we just thought that the cook messed up, but twice more we have tried it, and it's just too damned peppery :(..

It used to be good though :)

8. No, not tough to make at all.
Used Paul Prudhomme's recipe from his Seasoned America cookbook. I love that cookbook. I've used it so much it's in pieces.

10. Well, not exactly.
You pound the steak real thin. Spice it up. Then cover it in seasoned flour and fry it till it's got a nice crispy coating on the outside like fried chicken. Then you make a nice gravy and serve it with mashed potatoes. And yes, it is appetizing. :)

11. How do you get the flour to stick to the steak while it's cooking?
I've never been able to get it to stick to chicken.

14. Here's how..
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 06:47 PM by SoCalDem
Pound the round steak ..a lot.. then in a bowl ..soak it for just a bit in water laced with a little vinegar (sounds gross, but it works)..

The meat will be a bit "whitish"..(it's ok)..

dab with a paper towel (leave it moist)..

dredge with flour..

put in a VERY HOT skillet with oil in it.. DO NOT TURN THE MEAT until the first side is very crispy... Take all the pieces out ..put on a plate..cooked side down.. ReHEAT the pan(w oil)..THEN put the meat back in , cooked side UP..

DO NOT COVER the pan..

That's how you get it crispy.. :)

then you can make gravy with the crunchies in the skillet :)

15. Lambert's in Ozark, Mo and Foley, AL has a chicken
fried steak that covers the entire platter and about an inch thick.
Put that with throw'd rolls, a mountain of mashed taters and three sides along with the freebie starters and you're ready to be wheeled out. About once a year.
