I just severed my ties with my last freelance client. They were the only one that I had kept and I had done work for them for more than 10 years.
They gave me piles of crappily written articles and horrible pictures and expected me to turn them into wonderful masterpieces. They are a youth non-profit so I stuck with it because I believed in their organization.
I've been wanting to quit for a year, but this last go-around was the final straw. Can you redesign the cover to put in our 50th anniversary logo? Sure. You know I really should charge you for that, but I'll let it slide.
They give me the materials a week late and I only get them because I have to call asking where they are. Oh, sure, give me an extra week, but that doesn't take into account I was going out of town and you threw my schedule off.
What do you mean you can't fax this over now? Why should it matter that the fax is located right next to your boss's office? You don't think he would appreciate you using their equipment to do freelance work while you're on the clock for them.
Ooops! Didn't I tell you to change the headers because we can't do that with the logo? Doesn't matter that we've had it that way for the past five years. We need to change it now. What do you mean you just can't delete it? Oh, it's an Illustrator file and you don't have the original font. Well, you could create something else, couldn't you?
Well, we're ready with the corrections. Oh, we'll need to delete this whole paragraph of text. We changed our minds about it. Gaping hole of white space? Can't you just move things around?
I probably should have waited until I cooled down a bit to quit, though. I guess I figured if I didn't do it now, I wouldn't. I've been mulling this over for the past two years, so it wasn't really impulsive. But, I will admit I could have handled it better.
I'll write them a nice, polite letter in a day or two to smooth things over.
Whew! End of rant. I feel better now. :D
