Was listening to Gentlemen today. What a great album, that has to be one of the best albums ever. Of course, the fact that I think that doesn't really reflect well on my view of long-term relationships. Shhhh, don't tell my wife.

1. Great album....the really came into their own...

The one before that (Congregation was it?) was so so, but I'm glad I didn't write them off after that because Gentlemen was phenomenal. I still listen to that about once a month.

Never heard much of their work after that, nor have I heard Duli's band The Twilight Singers

2. Saw 'em a couple of times circa Black Love

Phenomenal live outfit, great big cinematic songs.

3. My favorite cover band

Saw an amazing "hometown" show at Bogart's on their Black Love tour... started with Prince's "The Cross" and ended with a huge rave of Prince's "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man." In between, all their best stuff, and a special version of "Moon River" for Greg's mom who was there for her birthday. Would pay a pretty penny for a decent videotape of THAT show...

Other favorite covers done by the Whigs were their versions of TLC's "Creep" and an incredibly sinister "If I Only Had a Heart" from the Wizard of Oz... plus that song from "Jesus Christ Superstar" on "Congregation."

In a way, they were sort of like Soul Asylum... one transcendent album in the middle of an otherwise so-so -- if lengthy -- career.

The first Twilight Singers album was just OK. Haven't heard the new one yet.

(Anyone care to discuss Cincinnati's other favorite sons, the criminally underrated Ass Ponys? Chuck Cleaver is his generation's Flannery O'Conner. Brilliant... pick up "Lohio" if you have a chance.)

4. To what Soul Asylum album do you refer....

I agree with your assesement, but I'm curious if the transcendant album you speak of is the same one I feel they peaked on, which was Hang Time. That album was the soundtrack of my freshman year of college.

Ass Ponys kick, well, ass. I have the Mr. Superlove album on OKra Records. Wonderful record.

I disagree with your assessment of Whigs albums, though. I think it's a crime "Big Top Halloween" hasn't been reissued beyond its original run of 1000, "Up in It" was good if uneven, "Congregation" and "Gentlemen" were brilliant, "Black Love" was pretty good (considering it's probably their worst), and "1965" is terribly underrated.

And don't get me started on the "Uptown Avondale" EP. THE best covers record EVER.

6. Ass Ponys

I just picked up Electric Rock Music today. Good Stuff. I bought Mr. Superlove, like 10 years ago when the Whigs covered it on an ep. So far, Place Out There and Peanut '93 are standout tracks.

The newest Twilight Singers album is much better than the first one; it almost sounds like the bridge between Black Love and 1965. Their version of Creep is powerful. I think that Gentlemen and Black Love (with their respective singles) were probably Dulli and crews pinnacle. I did see on a website that their guitarist has a new band and will be at SXSW. Have you heard 'em or seen 'em?

Congregation is still my favorite. 1965 is right up there with 2nd. Then Up In It, then Black Love, then Gentlemen.

I think I had a problem with Gentlemen because it came out after I'd been fucked over brutally, and it was REALLY hard for me to listen to. Still is.

I saw them in Austin around 91, and I had tickets to see them the next night after Dulli got brained at Liberty Lunch with the beer bottle. Fuck! What an inglorious end to a great band.
