Rat tail in my pizza
Last night we ordered several pizzas and when I took a slice from one, I saw something like a twig sticking out from the the remaining pizza. I pulled it out and it was, unmistakably, a rat's tail. My husband called the company to complain and corporate headquarters will call him back within three business days.

Today one of my sons competed at a Math Counts event, and what did they serve but pizza made by the same company! Of course he wouldn't eat it and I mentioned what had happened to another mom. She proceeded to tell me a story about a local Japanese steakhouse that served her husband a Coke that had roach hiding at the bottom of the glass. Another friend's father ordered a bowl of clam chowder at a seafood chain and found the clam he was chewing was someone's gum.

Does this sort of thing happen to everyone? The rat tail that came with my order last night had been baked which has me wondering what the rat was doing in a hot pizza oven and where's the rest of the rat?

4. Well, hopefully, restaurants and food processors are as careful as they
can be, but animals parts, and people parts, are invariably gonna get into the food.

Even flour has a legally mandated allowable amount of rat and mouse poop than be in it.

Not to excuse anything that happened to you - especially the roach a glass, the waiter should have looked first before pouring, but roaches get into everything, and if it's busy, yeah, I can see people just grabbing glasses as they come, assuming they're clean, and pouring stuff into them.

The rat tail could have been chopped off by a piece of machinery near the pizza making thing, fallen onto the dough, perhaps between the dough coming out of the roller and before the sauce is poured on, and thus, there it was left to be.

It's gross, and we don't want to support negligence, but it's gonna happen.

35. You must live in one of the 15 towns I've lived in during my lifetime
The good old Chinese restaurant story gets me every time. Everyone "knows" of at least one of these Chinese restaurants. As someone who knows a health inspector, I can tell you this is total BS. If something like this were to occur ONCE there would be SERIOUS criminal repercussions. Do you really think a place would be allowed to reopen ONCE, let alone 3 times? Wait, the little scummy Chinese restaurant is actually run by the Chinese mob and they are able to pay off the health department right?

You know marijuana is illegal because of similar stereotypes involving "savage" foreigners right? I'd expect this on FreeRepublic but not here.

12. Wow
I read all the replies to my husband and we laughed but now he has out the phone book looking up the number for the Health Department. We're really not looking to get rich from a rat tail though I would like a refund. I'm a former restaurant manager and know how these things go, but you're right, we should report it to the authorities.

Someone actually answered my husband's call, and the person said someone else would call us right back.

Remember, rat pies were a common thing in both Europe and the US in days gone by.

I grew up on a farm. I'll wager I ate things that many would call disgusting. We called them dinner.

21. Ugh! Could you please tell us the restaurant & location?
I'd personally like to avoid it...

My husband and I had bad scallops at a Chinese restaurant once. After tasting them, and finding them unfit, the waitress asked if I wanted something else! We went home without paying and called the Health Department. They didn't have their refrigerator cold enough.

Another story: Years ago, friends of mine and I were eating at a Chinese restaurant in Baltimore, and one of my friends found a roach in her food. When she complained to the waitress, she answered, "Are you sure you don't want it? It's only a little one."

38. You are right
I had a relative who as a young adult worked on a segregated train as a cook, as was the custom, he certainly couldn't eat on the cars. After what I heard what he did to cooked oatmeal, and having sweet potatoes cooked in (accidental) rat broth, eating out just doesn't do it for me....

love chocolate so much there is no way to keep them out of it. Consequently when you eat chocolate you are eating roaches, so much so that most people who are allergic to chocolate are actually allergic to roaches.

Is this from a national pizza place? I know for legal reasons you cannot name names but just tell me whether it's national or local to your area.

I'd rather not say which one because if there is a rat problem, I don't want to give them the heads up before the Health Department visits them, not that they monitor this site or anything, but who knows?

39. Re: Bad quality control
"what the rat was doing in a hot pizza oven and where's the rest of the rat?"

There's only one way the remnant of a rat can be found baked in a pizza - the rat must have been cooked in the pizza. Which means that the pizzas from that company was probably made of in-house processed mincemeat in lousy quality control work environment. Y'all or another customer probably ate the rest of the rat...

40. They say confession is good for the soul.
Here goes:

Many years ago I worked at an Arbys and I ran the meat slicer quite a bit of the time. The deal is you have to be fast at making sandwiches and you have to weigh the meat so that each portion is accurate in each sandwich. I saw any number of accidents with that slicer--they kept it VERY sharp.

One day, just before reporting to work a lunch rush, I painted my nails (which I kept long back then.) I know that my nails were all equally long when i began that shift. About 200 sandwiches later, I looked down and realized that about a quarter of an inch of my thumbnail was missing--polish and all.

I took that slicer apart, and I stripped every part off that machine--but that thumbnail was GONE. Somebody got it in a sandwich--I am convinced.

The manager knew about it--I told her as soon as I realized it--but by that point who knows what sandwich it was in...

I still have guilt feelings about it except for the fact that I am happy it wasn't about a quarter inch of my THUMB that got lost in that sandwich.

Laura
