1. I so miss
MST3K

It is such a classic. A guy and three bots goofing on bad-bad-bad scifi flicks...

Pumaman! The Giant Spider Invasion... The list is horrifying and oh so luscious.

4. The MST3K alumni have spilt into two camps, minus the bots...
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Tom Corbett are currently producing "RiffTrax"...

http://www.rifftrax.com/

Joel Hodgson has reunited with Trace Beaulieu, J Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl as "Cinematic Titanic"...

http://www.cinematictitanic.com/

Neither group has bots. Nelson & crew do off-camera voices, while Hodgson replicates the "silhouette" thing with the deck of a ship instead of movie seats.

Both have a considerable amount of product available, in tangible form as well as downloads. Lots of teaser clips on both sites.

9. I haven't seen any RiffTrax, but Cinematic Titanic is hillarious.
Joel and crew still got it.

10. those MST3K DVDs are rather pricey...
$40 or $50 for 4 shows? Considering the episodes probably cost about $50 each to produce...

14. Limited audience. Economy of scale. Cost of licensing the movies.
Each episode is 90 minutes long, don't forget. And the shows were actually pretty expensive to make because they had to rent the rights to the films. Now because of MST's success, the asking price has greatly increased since then on a lot of them. You may notice that none of the old Universal films they did are out on DVD because Universal is making their own releases and either won't release them or will do so only at too great a cost. Amazing Collossal Man, one of the first to come out on video tape, was cancelled after a short run and not renewed because the film owners pulled the license.

18. I agree with everything that Deep13 said, plus...
...the licensing just moved (effective with the 20th Anniversary set) from Rhino to Shout Factory. Both companies have a reputation for producing top-quality items and they both charge accordingly. Shout Factory did the SCTV DVD sets, which were beautiful, and also very expensive. They also had plenty of extras, and the MST3K sets look like they will too. The 20th Anniversary set had a nice 3-part "History of MST3K" documentary and a reunion-slash-panel discussion of the key players at Comicon in San Diego.

17. Joel!
Mike may have been fine as a writer, but damn. . . the show just wasn't cool after that. It was like Cuckoo's Nest, where Jack Nicholson has the lobotomy and all the other crazies start acting out his lines. :(
