Suggestions for potty training a new pup

Leave it to us to adopt the most stubborn puppy. He will pee outside with ease but won't poop outside. Instead, he stays and whines for 30 minutes at the door. We let him in and within minutes he poops. At least cleaning up poop is easier than pee, but what works?

We are crate training him and the crate is not too big.

1. Switch to paper, the potty is too hard for a puppy to access n/t

2. You have to catch him in the act.

As soon as he squats, pick him up and rush outside with him. When he poops outside, reward him like he is the most wonderful puppy in the world!

Take him back to the same spot until he gets the idea. When you clean up his accident in the house, take the "deposit" outside and let him sniff it.

Are you taking him outside, or letting him out on his own? If you aren't out there with him, he will cry at the door because he thinks you abandoned him! Take him out on a leash and keep going back to the place where you deposited the deposit.

3. We carry him outside and wait

and wait and wait. He just sits and watches us.

4. He'll catch on eventually!

One of our dogs always poops after playtime. So we take a ball outside and throw it for a little bit, then tell her "Go potty."

He just might need to walk around and sniff and find his favorite spot. Just be sure to make a really big deal when he finally does what you want him to do. Sounds like he just doesn't understand it yet.

6. He is pure boxer and 10 weeks old. We got him Sunday evening

Today he mastered going down the stairs.


when I put him to bed tonight, he cried very little. A far cry from the first 3 nights.

7. He's not stubborn, he's too young to meet your expectations.

A puppy is barely able to control his/her body at that age, never mind understand having to go outside to use the bathroom. He's like an infant child crawling around your house. That's why people use diapers.

You've gotten some really good advice upthread about taking the pup outside, giving praise when he goes where he should, etc. Be consistent with that, and you'll be just fantastic in a few weeks.

Boxers especially. Excellent dogs that really want to be family and please their people. But, they are a bully breed so they never really mature past childhood. Patience with your new pup at this young age will go a very, very long way in his life with you.

9. That makes sense

We will just keep doing the crate and add the taking the poop outside. We always praise him saying GOOD BOY a lot when he does go.

He seems to have the peeing down.
