I was lucky enough to see SRV back in September 1985 at a place I frequented in Norfolk, VA called The Boathouse. Incredible show. I still miss him.

He helped get me through the 80's. When the plastic tools at my high school were fawning over Duran Duran and The Culture Club, and the butt-rockers who listened to spandex crap like Quiet Riot or Motley Crue were roaming the halls, I had SRV and other blues artists to keep that wretched decade real.

Some of my faves are pure wankers! He was great at the styles he played, and I've no doubt he could have played many other styles had he chosen to.

I guess my angle is that there are many other valid types of music out there, and many people who play guitar outside of accepted genres get overlooked simply because it takes more than a few listens to appreciate them. I know a lot of guitarists who learned blues...because it was one of the easier genres TO learn. I don't mean that as the knock it sounds like, as much of what I get into is no genius shit, let me tell you. It's just the way it is. Even B.B. King said so in an interview one time...and he's no slouch in the guitar department! :)

All this is in fun of course. I like SRV, respect him and his talent, I just hear music in odd ways. What we like is all based on our own life experiences, so to harp on someone for what they like is like blaming them for growing up wrong. I like what I like for my reasons, and others like what they like for their reasons. It's all subjective, so I just like seeing people who are truly INTO music, no matter what genre it falls under. :toast:

This is the one example I'll share....there's no way you'll like this like you do with Stevie Ray Vaughn, but listen to this with an open mind and tell me this guy isn't a great guitarist...it's not the style you may be used to, but it's equally as valid.

24. I actually prefer the piano to the guitar, but I prefer

the bluesy rock to just about anything else. My husband looks at music in a similar way that you do. He actually doesn't even listen much to the lyrics (which is absurd to me). He listens to the actual music from the instruments. I like the lyrics. I like to hear what they are singing about. If the instruments don't appeal to my husband, he won't really listen to the message of the song.

25. Lyrics are secondary to me, usually. It depends on the genre.

I get into a lot black metal, for instance, and while the lyrics are ok, it's not something I really care about overall. A lot of it deals with Satan or God, and I don't believe in either, so it's the vibe and the music that grabs me more than the lyrics. But there are a lot of bands where the lyrics are key to my getting into them (anything Jello Biafra does, for instance). Lyrics in punk are important to me (bands like The Ex, Crass, Chumbawamba) because punk stands for something and needs the words to back it up. But in most forms of music I know better than to expect lyrical brilliance.

If a song has a good message I'll respect it, but if it has a good message AND a good riff I'll respect it and jam to it, too. :)

And then there's some music that has no message at all but is just fun shit anyways. I'll always have room for that stuff too! Sometimes attitude for the sake of attitude works just fine for me. ;)

18. The point is they are both so awesome. They aren't very

similar music wise, but they are similar awesome wise. We are comparing crazy things. Like Tina Turner's Proud Mary or CCR's Proud Mary. It really gets down to your personal taste in music. Seeing Elvis perform in his prime or the Beatles? Stuff like that. They are supposed to be hard to answer.

I saw Wonder on a double bill with Gil Scott-Heron and that was a great show.

Vaughan was only a great guitarist, as much as I like him. Way down the creativity scale. Wonder could also play all the instruments just by himself.

Stevie Wonder is long past his big hit days, but his stuff was monumental and historic in its time. Stevie is also, among all his other talents, a great vocalist.

I think he is up there with Hendrix as the greatest guitar player ever. I'm no expert but I knew guitar players who said Hendrix was the best but Stevie Ray was up there as well.

40. It is debatable as to the best. But Vaughan was definitely

in there with the best of them. He died too young. But that goes for many other greats.
