Windows 7 is actually *gulp* pretty good (not an April Fool's)

Bought my first system with Windows 7. It might actually be a real, stable OS. Who would have thought??? Definitely beats the hell out of Vista (and yes) XP.

A full 3 days and NO crashes, conflicts, slowdowns, ANYTHING.

Not giving up my Ubuntu box either, but this one will do for an educational desktop.

Pre-dodging apple cores thrown in my direction.

1. I still have XP

I looked into upgrading to Win 7 but since I have XP I will have to reformat my harddrive and I can't be bothered right now looking for install disks to programs and stuff.

I dislike Vista because of the changes made to the interface and the 'adminsrator' thingy; annoying, un-needed changes.

I don't have any troubles with the annoying "Do you really want to allow this?" popups either, after I disabled them.

5. Have it on my laptop and one computer

The only problem i had was a HP problem. Laserjet 1018 didn't want to install. So I swapped printers with a different computer. Samsung works fine on 7, HP works fine on XP X64.
A few minor annoyances that I'm still learning to tweak. Seems to be stable and uses one hell of a lot less RAM than Vista.

6. A whole 3 days? Took me almost a year to get my first XP crash...

but I hear 7 is better yet than XP where it counts-- speed, stability, memory management...

Did one of MS's checks on my system and it said I could use a new video card to get all the goodies, so I'll pass for now and wait to get a new box with 7 in it. Damn things are cheap enough and worth a couple hundred extra to avoid the hassle of upgrading from XP.

(I had an Ubuntu box once, but couldn't find anything to do with it that didn't work as well or better in XP)

7. What I like most about Ubuntu is that I NEVER have to enter serial numbers...

... product activation codes, program registration, none of that shit. Ubuntu is a quick install on as many boxes as I want and it makes upgrading to a new computer is almost trivial in comparison to Windows machines.

Ubuntu (or it's geeky parent Debian) does everything I use computers for.

I refuse to touch anything Windows unless someone is paying me or I'm donating my time to a non-profit or school.

It's my belief that non-profits and schools shouldn't be using Windows at all. If businesses insists on using Windows let them do the training, let them put up with all the hassles of proprietary systems, let them pay the "Microsoft Tax" and leave the rest of us out of it.

8. my IT manager seems to think it's ok, too

like me, he prefers open-source, but is willing to deal with Windows.

We provide limited support (which may become more direct) to a number of libraries, which almost all use Windows, so it doesn't make sense for us to abandon Windows at our office, though some of us would be happy to.

XP has been ok, have Vista on my home desktop and hate it, but I've heard good things about 7, so I imagine I'll be upgrading, at least on my work computer.

We have Ubuntu on our home laptop, and we're fine with it.

As a note, I would love for our libraries to all move to open-source, but it doesn't seem likely that many will.

Pisses me off too that I have $4k in software that's only two years old and it would even install on Win7. Microsoft and the vendor know about the problem and instead of making a fix their only option is to spend another $2k for an upgrade.
