Protest tips needed--Dick Cheney fundraising in my town next week.
How does one avoid the "free speech zones?"

How to attract media attention?

What's legal and illegal?

**********

This is my first demonstration/protest. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

1. what town are you in?
Post it and see what other DUers near you are also going to be there! These sorts of events are great for meeting other likeminded people. Find out through your local Democratic club whether or not there's already something planned.

Good luck!

2. I don't want to mention the town yet (lurkers), but yes, I am networked.
We're trying to figure out how to keep from getting penned up like flipping animals . . .

5. I 'wore' my t-shirt protest sign under a sweatshirt, then...took it off!
I wrote my protest message on a neon-lime green t-shirt that I wore under a sweatshirt. Then I 'scooched' my t-shirt off and held it over my head when B*** was here in Alamogordo, NM.
Another way to protest is vocally. I heard someone shouting "Liar Liar-pants on fire"

7. getting their attention
The press loves a visual presentation that speaks words without words. So here is a suggestion: Get a few friends together and find a friendly costume shop. Go as King George (Bush mask, royal wear, crown) and Marie Antionette (powdered wig, costume jewelry). Have friends dress like pages and get up a royal "procession". Bake many many yellow cupcakes (maybe with dollar signs on top) and do a "let them eat cake" moment with your fellow protesters. (Tip: Be sure to hang on to a prop cupcake or two, sometimes the media will ask you to re-stage the moment). This particular street perfomance alludes to many things and is bound to get some coverage. Practice a sound byte or two and please don't get nervous and ramble in an interview. they can edit and make you look like hell.

Reasons to use this kind of action: A. It is impossible to look sane when you are jumping up and down screaming. Everybody tunes out "crazy" people. B. People remember funny things. C. It's fun and protesters need to have fun to maintain momentum. D. You are sure to get people talking, and dialogue is the beginning of understanding.

Peace,
Teresa

8. Thanks, Teresa
I agree with all your points.

The one event I remember most from the 60's protest scene is when the yippies tried to "levitate" the pentagon.

You had MP's out there with bullhorns: "it is illegal to levitate the pentagon!"

Funny is better . . .
