No Jobs Recovery

The US economy added 162,000 jobs in March. Great news until you look more closely. In March, the federal government began hiring census takers big time. These are six-month temp jobs, and they tell us nothing about underlying trends in the labor market. It's hard to gauge precisely how many were hired - probably between 100,000 and 140,000, although some estimates put the hiring as low as 48,000. Almost a million census workers will need to be hired over the next few months. Subtract these, and today's job numbers are good but nothing to write home about.

There are some positive signs. Manufacturing payrolls expanded a bit, heath care employers added 27,000 jobs, and about 40,000 private-sector temp jobs were added. But payrolls continue to be slashed in financial services and the information industry.

2. Even temp jobs are JOBS. And a good chunk of the new numbers ARE permanent jobs. AND, the trend is

expected to CONTINUE according to many economists. So please be positive, Mr. Reich, and stop pissing on your own Cherrios.

as per my local news last night.

This is not a recovery when over 8 million people have lost jobs in the past 3 years!

Even Timmy did a presser thrusday and said it is a jobless recovery!And he see's no end in sight or in the near future!

so please do not say this is good news in anyway..when we still see stores and businesses closing shop daily in our neighborhoods! And see neighbors and friends and family suffering from lack of jobs and losing their homes..the census jobs are part time and paying approx $13.00 an hour..just try paying a mortgage or buying groceries with that! Or your kids sneekers for that matter!

3. census jobs are temporary

and he's right, not an indicator of the strength of the job market, but as another post here somewhere said, they do count.

Because of my wife's census job, we are able to be a little more liberal in our spending, and we will be able to spend a little money doing some work on our house, which will help sales - if there are a million census workers, that's a substantial number of people with a bit more money to spend, and could help spur more spending leading to more hiring, and a minor boost in employment on a more permanent basis.

But, it doesn't guarantee it - just wanted to mention that even temporary census jobs have some benefits.

5. I have to wonder

just how many of those newly created jobs are the result of folks who can't find work and are forced to start their own little business working out of their home and offering contract services.

I know a lot of people doing that kind of thing right now. For the most part, there isn't much, if any, assistance available to them. Most are earning a small fraction of what they previously earned. Most do not get lender or other (e.g., grant) financing. Most are depleting their personal and retirement savings. And most are just trying to survive. Just doing what they can because there are no frickin jobs available.

As a nation we've got nothing for them. But, by God, we'll throw out trillions of dollars to bail out the multinational corporations who are paying their executives tens of millions of dollars for providing a failed level of service.

The priorities in this country and in its leaders are fucked up. That includes the current administration. Seems they prefer to protect the welfare of the Wall Street boys while ignoring the struggle of the Main Street boys just to survive.

I live on Main Street and such conduct doesn't exactly recommend that they be retained in office.
