A little help needed - can anyone tell me how to find the original mpg on an older model car?

My neighbor had a 1988 Mazda 626 LX Hatchback and says the fuel economy was excellent.

We were discussing it because I had recently seen one with low miles for sale in a used car lot and so wanted to see if this was true.

I tried to find the mpg for that model in a google search but came up empty. Can anyone help me with this?

3. Keep in mind, it's not WHAT you drive, it's HOW you drive.

26 mpg may not be that great, but if you drive conservatively, you're MPG will be much better. Not that I'm advocating hypermiling...which I find annoying in most traffic situations.
