A convergence of federal and state tax credits and incentive programs is making the purchase and installation of solar energy systems free.

But in Oregon, it's the one-two punch of the newly boosted federal and the perennial state energy tax credits. Today, the federal government will pay 30 percent of the photovoltaic systems' cost, and Oregon covers 35 percent. They're tax credits, meaning they come dollar for dollar off the top of the company's tax liability.
Add that to an allowance for a five-year accelerated depreciation on the equipment and a "green tag" utilities incentive of 6 cents per kilowatt for all the energy the system generates.
