More than 1,000 Syrian intellectuals call for political reforms
The chairman of the committees in charge of defending democratic freedoms and human rights in Syria, Aktham Nueisah, said that more than 1020 Syrian intellectuals, writers and lawyers signed on Wednesday a petition demanding the authorities to make political reforms in Syria.
Among the political reforms demanded by the petition is lifting the state of emergency imposed in the country since 1963 and abrogating legal and political aftermath that resulted from that.
Nueisah said that this petition is addressed to the Syrian people and it is expected "we will observe a sit in to submit it to the Syrian authorities in March."
Nueisah expressed his hope that the petition will bear the signature of one million persons via the Internet web and from its supporters inside Syria directly and outside it. The opposition Syrian movements inside Syria and outside it call for abrogating the state of emergency.
