Suspect Pleads Guilty in Reporter Death
MANAGUA, Nicaragua - A former Sandinista security guard entered a guilty plea during a court hearing Friday in the shooting death of a Nicaraguan journalist.
Carlos Guadamuz was shot Tuesday while arriving at a television station where his program is filmed.
William Hurtado, 43, the former guard who was tackled at the scene by Guadamuz's son, had at first maintained innocence but on Friday pleaded guilty to manslaughter in his initial court appearance. The next step in the legal process wasn't immediately clear.
He insisted he acted on his own but it remained unclear whether the guilty plea would put to rest accusations that Hurtado was part of a conspiracy.
