Cape Town - A wild idea to start farming became a reality when 43 people living in the Bonnievale/ Robertson area formed a trust and, with the government's assistance, bought Gelukshoop, a 23ha wine farm.
The Bonnievale farm is one of 18 projects of black economic empowerment and land reform in the wine industry identified in a report presented at a recent regional conference in Stellenbosch organised by Wine Cellars South Africa and VinPro, the wine farmers' service organisation.
The trust is managed by six trustees, who meet every month to discuss the strategic direction of the farm. Day-to-day management is carried out by Toy Fortuin, a member who lives on the property.
