Virginia Tech Shootings: Gun Nuts Yet Again Politicize A Tragedy
http://themoderatevoice.com/131301/virginia-tech-shootings-gun-nuts-yet-again-politicize-a-tragedy/

The gunshot-riddled body of a Virginia Tech police officer making a traffic stop was not even cold yesterday afternoon before the gun nut lobby rushed in to politicize the tragedy on the campus where a student shot and killed 32 people in 2007. A second person who may be the gunman was found dead in a parking lot about a quarter mile away.

First up to the plate was Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, a group that advocates allowing university students to pack heat.

In a statement long on depravity and short on common sense, SCC said that:

sadly recognizes this incident proves yet again that nothing has changed at Virginia Tech. The college still entertain delusional beliefs that signs and stickers will prevent illegal weapons on campus, even as they protest paying fines for their failing to notify students of the initial murders preceding the worst shooting spree in history three (sic) years ago.

that the gun used to kill the LEO on campus was taken on campus illegally. If a bad guy or crazy decides to take a gun on campus to shot people Laws, Signs, and Rules are not going to stop them. Never have. Never will.

In any ambush or suprise attack, the first person targeted by the attacker(s) generally dies whether they are armed or not. How many others die is almost entirely dependent on the good guys state of readiness.

Semper Fi,

3. I also wonder...
...about those resisting civilian arms and relying on law enforcement when it is civilians who shoot friendlies much less often than LEOs.

12. You did read #2?
Hard facts:
(1) The cop was armed, and he could do nothing to prevent the attack on him, or potentially on anyone else
(2) The VT campus was "gun-free" according to signage and university regulation, but not so according to reality.

The carrying of firearms is designed primarily as a means of self-defense. It is not social policy, it is not guaranteed to stop school yard spectaculars, mall shootings, or gangster drive-bys. It is a method by which an individual can defend him/her self, and there is no guarantee that would work either.

But I have a right to carry (if I choose to exercise it) in order to better defend myself.

4. when your side politicizes a tragedy,
are you equally appalled?

I fail to see how it is depraved or absurd. It basically describes what happened.

7. what does this have to do with the right wing?
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 04:00 PM by gejohnston
To be perfectly honest, there is nothing the Bradys put out that puts anything in perspective. They are incredibly intellectually dishonest, and have yet to come up with a valid argument.
Propaganda laced with appeals to emotion and other logical fallacies (and outright lies) are not legitimate arguments.
Most of the people at Brady is far to the right of me, and probably to you too on other issues. This is only a right/left issue only because someone in the 1960s decided to put it in the Dem's platform. If you look at the origin of these century old laws that are being repealed were written by the right wing plutocrats for their purposes. Unfortunately, too many people in the middle, or who would vote Democratically in general, buy in to the whole thing.
Dennis Henigan is a token progressive that replaced a moderate Republican.

13. As expected from GOP-founded, GOP-led Brady Center.
I believe it was Helmke on the eve of the 2008 election who said he was still in a quandary as to whom he would vote for in the Presidential race. Is that a "win-win" for him?
