Hillary looks on bright side of dark video: Attention has shifted from "Star Spangled Banner" video
March 20, 2007
Clinton on Big Sister Video
By Sarah Wheaton

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is looking on the bright side about a dark video about her that’s been making the rounds on YouTube.

“I thank heavens for small favors and the attention has shifted and now maybe people won’t have to tune in and hear me screeching about ‘The Star Spangled Banner,” she said, alluding to another YouTube video that is one of the most watched about her on the site.

So, she prefers looking like Big Sister (a la George Orwell’s “1984”) in a ‘mashup’ video of an Apple Computers ad, ostensibly created by a supporter of Senator Barack Obama (his campaign denies any involvement in the ad) to people hearing her sing off-key.

Mrs. Clinton told NY1, the cable news channel in New York, that she hadn’t seen the ad, and she would not say whether it should be removed from the online video-sharing site:

You know, that’s for somebody else to decide. I don’t have an opinion one way of another. I think anything that drives interest in these campaigns and gets people who otherwise are not at all interested in politics, I think that’s pretty good. I might quibble a little bit about the content but if we get more people, especially young people, thinking about politics, I’m happy about that....

1. This video thing has increased my respect for her.
Because the video that appears in that ad, which can be viewed here:

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/video/11.aspx

starts out with Hillary having this creepy demeanor, but goes on to make really good policy points on energy. (except for the ethanol tax breaks which I don't back.) So really, the ad attacks demeanor not content. I do like the content of a lot of what she says when I look closer.

2. she is apparently one of the few that doesn't have her knickers in a twist
... over the 1984 ad, me being the other one.

I actually thought it was nicely done.

5. Same here
I too thought it was rather clever. Not a horrible attack by any means. Just one of the few paths available, you're either the fresh face who can bring change or you're an insider who knows the ropes.

The Obama supporter who put that together has an obvious grasp of this. If "same ol', same ol'" is too harsh by Clinton supporter standards I urge them to toughen up.

3. She's really humping that "I have a sense of humor" thing.
Stay on message. Good for her advisors. The comeback they came up with for her is cute.

6. I agree
Some self-deprecating humor is a good thing. Bob Dole was a master at this and it took him pretty far, in spite of his many negatives.

9. I didn't vote for Dole, but I have always liked him
He is funny, but he also seems like one of those guys with a sort of mean demeanor, but is really a sweet guy at heart.

8. Problems can be Opportunities
I am neither a detractor nor a fan of Hillary Clinton. The "1984" Apple ad spoof was very well done. Actually this sort of talent bodes well for the Dems in the general election.

Tactically, I think that the best thing Hillary could do for her campaign would be to take advantage of the spoof with a "spoof of the spoof". Admit that she can come off rather cold and robotic, add some humor to it, and take the opportunity to humanize herself before the "viral video" audience. It is free advertising that the media will surely replay over and over.

Nothing annoys an opponent more than turning the tables on them.

10. She hasn't seen it I guess the guy that made it should take it down not productive to the campaigns.
