Former Dean supporters: "I will/will not support Sen. Kerry because..."
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 09:39 AM by Cuban_Liberal
There's currently a poll here in DD-P2004 that shows a distinct disparity in the number of former Dean supporters aligning with Sen. Kerry, as opposed to former Dean supporters aligning with Sen. Edwards. I am curious to hear from those of Dr. Dean's supporters who have decided to support another candidate why they have or have not chosen to support Sen. Kerry.

Thank you.

1. Edwards has a more positive message
Edwards came from humble roots and fights for the ordinary people.

Kerry was my third choice. (dean, edwards, then kerry)

I'll still vote for the nominee in November.

39. Don't be suckered by Edwards.
He's not the humble roots kind of guy he's made himself out to be. If he's so on-the-side-of-jess-folks, why is he one of the handful of Dems who voted in favor of bank-friendly bankruptcy rules.

Positive-schmositive! How about some substance?

Not suggesting you vote for Edwards if you can still vote. I think Dean people should try to vote for Dean if they can.

4. I will support the nominee
but for now I'm routing for Kucinich.

I'm not enthusiastic about Kerry. I find his personality boring and I don't like his stance on the Iraq war but of course he's better than Bush. I don't dislike him, I respect him.

I'm not a third party type of person, no one with my sig name would be.

11. I was impressed by both
I heard them all speak at the Florida convention. Both Kerry and Edwards were better than expected. I was a Dean supporter long before, and at the time he seemed invincible.

I'm still open, but am leaning slightly towards Edwards. But I'll vote for either in November.:kick:

9. I haven't chosen one yet but here's my take
When Edwards talks, he sounds like a human being. Kerry sounds like a robot, as if every line is run through a focus group and rehearsed for a week before he says it.

Kerry is longwinded, and cannot seem to give a straight answer to a question.

Kerry voted for NAFTA. Edwards voted against it.

An Edwards/Dean ticket would be more viable than a Kerry/Dean ticket.

Really there's only thing I like about Kerry, but it's a big one: he fought in the Vietnam War with honor, then came back and protested against it. This could be a great symbol for a Democratic foreign policy message if the party weren't so scared of taking a real stand on Vietnam.

12. Maybe
I haven't really thought about it that way, but I always thought that a Dean-Edwards ticket would be very strong.

Edwards-Dean has a real nice sound to it.

"Kerry voted for NAFTA. Edwards voted against it."

I don't think Edwards could have voted against it, because he wasn't in Congress yet. Can you explain more of what you mean?

If Edwards was in the senate at the time, he says he would have voted against it. I'll take him at his word, but Edwards did not vote against.

17. I support both Dean AND Edwards.
I still support Dean, but seeing as how he is not activily running for President (all but dropped out), I am also supporting Edwards.

Here is why:
1. Edwards can actually beat Bush and the election won't even be close.
2. Edwards is more charismatic.
3. Past history dictates that only a Southern Democrat can win the Presidency.
4. Kerry speaks out of both sides of his mouth, promises everyone everything, but giving nothing. He says a whole lot but at the end of the conversation he really said nothing.
5. Edwards is anti-NAFTA.
6. His message resonates with swing voters and cross-over voters.
7. Picture a Edwards vs Bush debate. You know if Kerry is too chicken to debate Edwards that Bush is toast. 'nuff said.

I don't want to get a warning so I can't share. Read my other posts replies and you will get an safe idea. There are quite a few good replies already....Edward most certainly has Integrity! He is Presidential and can clean-up the south if we all support our candidate. Remember, Clinton and other leading democrats will be out there too campaigning to take back the White House. We need a southerner as a candidate.

He's TOO chummy with Toricelli, Gephart, et al, who helped fund the Osama Ad, plus which he will just be 'Rich Boy A' as opposed to 'Rich Boy B' in the minds of too many 'swing voters' in the GE.

Priorities
Preventing Hate Crimes
John Kerry is an original cosponsor of the Hate Crimes Prevention bill, which would extend federal jurisdiction over serious, violent hate crimes. These would include crimes motivated by sexual orientation. Hate crimes rose a disturbing 3.5% from 1999 to 2000.

Ending Discrimination
One of John Kerry’s first acts as a U.S. Senator, in 1985, was to introduce a bill prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. He supports passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and has adopted a nondiscrimination policy for his Congressional offices based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Subject:
2004 Presidential candidates positions on a trans-inclusive ENDA

Note: The Bolds and Size Fonts are my addition, to make my point!! - Mermaid

1a. As president, would you support and work for passage of a federal bill that outlawed discrimination in the workplace based on gender identity and expression?

EDWARDS:
Comments:

I believe discrimination is wrong.

I am an original
cosponsor of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, which prohibits
discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation.

KERRY: OPPOSE

Comments: I oppose discrimination of all kinds and my office policy
prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on gender identity and
expression.

I believe that we should focus efforts on getting ENDA passed and signed into law, and I am concerned that adding gender identity and expression to the ENDA legislation is likely to significantly hinder that effort.

Editor Note: Basically, by his words, Kerry has just told us transgenders we are too controversial to deserve rights...he is willing to sell us down the river...we are being told by Kerry to move to the back of the bus!! Now WHY THE HELL should I support him, after he tells ME to go to the back of the bus?!?!?!

By the way, my original source for this was the HRC web site. This page is no longer available on their site, unfortunately. but check with HRC if you don't believe me.

30. Well, Kerry is my second choice after Dean, but
he offers more of the same. Edwards at least has an outsider appeal about him with a Jack Kennedy charm. I can't bring myself to support Edwards because of my specific criteria for a Presidential candidate (mainly being elected twice for the same national office,) I like him a lot better than I like Kerry. I don't select my leaders based on who I like, though, I select them on who I think can accomplish the agenda he has laid out.

Kerry will do fine, but will be uninspiring and will struggle not to be a single term President.

31. He will say after his inauguration about Iraq:
"We must not fail. One thousand eight hundred american soldiers have given their lives for the freedom of Iraqis. Terrorists have infiltrated the country and continue to cause mayhem. We cannot walk away from the people who are so close to freedom. We must put down the civil wars that have killed 100,000 iraqi civilians thus far. Therefore, I am instructing draft boards to begin calling up all eligible young people for service. We must send another 150,000 american soldiers to Iraq to restore order A war will not be lost on my watch."

And 55% of the public will agree with him.

33. There is also a disparagin number of Dean supporters
In DU polls on who the members of DU support as a candidate. The rate of DU supporters of Dean is almost in inverse proporiton of the support Dean had in the primaries and caucuses, which is a clear indication that the number of people who oppose the other candidates and support Dean will likely have a nominal effect in the general election. Also polls of the same people who supported Dean in New Hampsire, Iowa and later primarties indicated that Kerry was widelt the second choice of Dean supporters in the non-Internet world, while far fewer Kerry supporters selected Dean as their second choice. I beleive, but cant be certain, but the New Hampsire polls showed that 3 out of 4 Dean supporters selected Kerry as their second choice.

37.  I refuse to "support" Kerry because a nearly dozen horrific votes/no-vote
that he has made in the last three years: IWR, No-Child Left Behind, Patriot Acts I and II, Overtime Bill, etc, etc. I'm not saying I won't vote for Kerry, that's silly, but I won't be wearing any campaign buttons, donating time and money, or even trying to convince people to vote for him.

I'm sorry, I just can't support a man whom I disagree with and despise on many issues. It's just not going to happen. On Nov. 2nd, Kerry will get a check mark from me, but that's all.
