Byrd say's Bush needs a one way ticket back to Crawford
"The best thing for America, for the country, would be for the president to be given a one-way ticket back to his ranch in Crawford, Texas," said Byrd, D-W.Va.

A West Virginia Poll conducted in August gives Byrd higher approval ratings than the president. Seventy-two percent of those surveyed gave Byrd good or excellent marks, while 53 percent gave the president a favorable review.

Four years ago, Bush appealed to West Virginians by pledging to help save steel jobs. Bush imposed, and then lifted, tariffs on imported steel, much to the consternation of the state's congressional delegation.

Remember Byrd wasnt a big Gore backer in 2000. I believe that is partly the reason he lost WV, and of course all of those lies that Bush fed the people to get there votes. Well there a little unhappy with Bush now.

He moved into the "ranch" in February of 2000, it was completely a campaign move.

4. Gore blew it in WV
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 01:21 PM by xray s
I think Gore waited until the final weekend of the campaign to finally get Byrd's endorsement and campaign with him.

When I saw that on C-SPAN, I thought "man...what was he thinking?"

Getting Byrd behind the ticket early this year will switch WV from red to blue...guaranteed.

7. He lost WV becasue of his percieved stands on the enviornment
Coal mining is very big in WV, and the perception that Gore would push policies that would put them out of work caused some Democrats to vote for Bush.

13. Ah...the key point is "perception"
There were a lot of perceptions about Gore that were untrue. Getting Byrd's endorsement early could have helped Gore dispel the perception that he was going to put miners out of work in WV. Oh well...I think we will do better at the perception game this time around.

16. That was probably a factor also, but Clinton won WV by large margins
in 1992 and 1996. Clinton was just as feared by NRA members as Gore.

14. I thought it had more to do with NRA $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The environment thing makes sense too but I remember hearing about the TONS of money the NRA spent in WV.

He's such a trendsetter! Everyone, but EVERYONE, is copying him! Dean should design a line of clothing... he's all the rage!

9. Senator Byrd is my hero
For this statement to be in this article;

State Republican Chairman Kris Warner is skeptical. "I think there's this ‘anything but Bush' mentality," he says. He believes that voters see Byrd as "an old, out-of-touch man."

Why does Kris Warner think Byrd is out of touch? These personal attacks on people who want to live by the constitution and take our country back are unacceptable.

I for one, am sick of all these people attacking anyone who disagrees with Bush*.

Are we better off today because of his residency in our white house?

10. Byrd has influence
I live in NW VA very close to WV, and Senator Byrd appears to be well-respected. I think his words carry clout.

15. ya beat me to it. truthspeaker
the only true road to recovery in this country is the trial for treason of Mr. G.W. Bush, et.al. the militarist corporate fascists must be tried and convicted of their crimes against humanity.
