I just finished watching this riveting documentary from 1992. It shows Poppy Bush running basically the same kind of imperialistic invasion that his son later did in Iraq. Same playbook:
1.) Work with a corrupt, law-breaking strong man (Noreiga) in order to influence/control the country (in this case the Panama Canal). 2.) When that doesn't work, demonize him to the American public ("he has pornography!!"). 3.) Beat the drums of war, spouting talk about restoring Freedom and Democracy to an oppressed people 4.) Invade that country and let the U.S. military beat the hell out of those same people, kill civilians wantonly, create mass graves, burn homes, all the while suppressing all media outlets except for the official military ones. Deny that there is any wrong-doing on the part of the military. Say that 250 civilians have died when actually the number is much closer to 4,000. Let the military try out all of its new weaponry to see how it works, using far, far more firepower than is necessary. 5.) Set up a new puppet regime, giving the U.S. another power base of operations in a region so that it can invade and conquer the assets of even more neighboring countries. 6.) Rinse and repeat.
GHWB did all this in Panama, practicing for his subsequent invasion of Iraq. I almost think that he didn't go ahead and invade Baghdad during Desert Storm so that he could save a little tidbit for his son to invade. Iraq War Part Deux. Every president needs a nice tidy little war, after all.
"The Panama Deception" re-airs on Link TV tomorrow morning, 7 a.m. Eastern.
