Pelosi calls Cheney swipe undignified

By: Mike Allen
Dec 7, 2007 12:22 PM EST

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says a swipe that Vice President Cheney took at Democratic House leaders is beneath the dignity of his office.

Capitol Hill was abuzz Thursday with discussion of the vice presidents assertion in an interview with Politico that House Democratic leaders had been surprisingly supine: They are not carrying the big sticks I would have expected.

Cheney added that when he served in the House, We would not have had a Speaker who, from my perspective, is that far out of the sort of mainstream she is a San Francisco Democrat, certainly entitled to her views, but able to dictate policy as effectively as she apparently does to the rest of the caucus.

The speaker, a few hours after winning a long-sought victory on an energy bill that increases auto efficiency requirements, said in an interview with Politico that she had paid little attention to the hullabaloo.

To tell you the truth, Ive been really busy the last 24 hours, Pelosi said. How can I say this with the dignity of the office that I hold, and especially the dignity of the office that the vice president holds? Its so beneath the dignity of his office and mine that I dont even want to address it.

Pelosi said her leadership style is to find consensus among leaders and committee chairs.

Of course, I have the responsibility at the end of the day, she said. But Im very respectful of their read on the situation, she said. Those people are our distinguished chairmen. I have enormous respect for their knowledge of the subject.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) did not comment on the remark but said in a Politico interview that someone I was with said that the comment sounded sexist.

Here's what the ole battle ax said:

and way to come to Speaker's aid Mr. Reid. Of course if Reid had said this about a GOP female leader Reid would be on the floor apologizing that day.

3. Well, naturally
Pelosi has never told anyone to go fuck themselves on the floor of the House.
She is nowhere near Cheney's league. You don't get into Cheney's mainstream
until you have done something like what he did. I'll bet she doesn't even
own real estate in an oil-producing region of the Middle East.
