Alex Penelas: Statement Endorsing John Kerry
Here's my response to the anti-Cuban American DU'ers who have been smearing Penelas by calling him a right-wing Republican:

PENELAS ENDORSES KERRY FOR PRESIDENT - Alex Penelas calls on Democrats to unite behind John Kerry

TALLAHASSEE— Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, Democrat candidate for the United States Senate, is endorsing Massachusetts Senator John Kerry for President.

“Sen. Kerry is an experienced and accomplished leader,” said Penelas. “He has spent his entire adult life fighting for Democratic values on issues such as education, health care, the economy, and national security -- all issues where President Bush has failed.”

Penelas and Kerry share a commitment to one issue in particular: health care. Forty million Americans are living and working without health care.

“That is criminal and it’s un-American,” said Penelas. “Here we are, as a country, throwing our weight around the rest of the world when Americans right here in our cities and towns go to work every day and still can’t afford health care. John Kerry has a plan to change that, and I plan to support him.”

Penelas cites Bush’s job performance as another reason for supporting Kerry and he is calling on Florida Democrats to unite and do the same.

“Our biggest job in this election is to replace President Bush,” said Penelas. “In order to do that, Democrats need to rally around one nominee as early as possible. I believe that nominee should be John Kerry.”

1. Puhhleeassee
This is called, "Please Mr Gore, don't speak out against me and ruin my re-election campaign". He left Gore out to dry in 2000.

4. Do you believe Penelas is a right-wing Republican?
I know that there are some DU'ers who simply can't comprehend the possibility that a Cuban American politician could be anything other than a right-wing Republican. If you belong to this group, please explain why a right-wing Republican would endorse John Kerry.

7. He endorsed Kerry while the primaries were still going on

And Dean and Edwards were still both vying for the nomination

And Gore's attack was a partisan stunt to help his blowhard buddy Deutsch.

This statement is from several months ago. He and Kendrick Meek both endorsed Kerry around the same time

8. Article from NYT from 2000...he thought about becoming Republican.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/12/01/politics/01DADE.html?ex=1086926400&en=22469bcddd9e0968&ei=5070&pagewanted=1&ei=5070&en=e15542e22d190da8&ex=1086753600

3 pages long, but very interesting. A good write-up from December 2000.

SNIP..."The Democrats clearly believed Mr. Penelas was an ally and they attribute his inaction at the critical moment to his ties to Republican politicians here, including Representatives Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen — who led Mr. Bush's attack on the Florida recounts.

An associate of the mayor said Mr. Penelas was considering becoming a Republican, and seriously considering a run for Congress in a Hispanic- dominated district that might result from reapportionment in 2002."

11. It IS possible to screw over the democratic nominee
and not be a right wing freeper, just a disloyal weasel politician who whores out to the highest bidder.

13. Thank you.
The world and the people in it are a lot more complicated than most of the simplistic debates on DU acknowledge.

12. Why have elections, then? Let's let YOU pick our officials, eh?
Hey, two can play at that game. I think Nader should drop out. Bush should drop out too. Kerry should also drop out, clearing the way for John Edwards to become president by acclimation. Seriously, elections -- particularly contested elections -- are definitely overrated. The voters often get things wrong. Why give them that opportunity?
