Archbishop: PM's spending plea is like a drug addiction
THE Archbishop of Canterbury launched a biting attack on Gordon Brown's economic strategy, comparing it to an "addict returning to the drug".
Dr Rowan Williams said a greed-fuelled consumer boom had caused the crisis and measures such as cutting VAT to boost spending would repeat the mistakes of the past.
"It seems a little bit like the addict returning to the drug," he declared.
People should not "spend to save the economy", he said, but instead spend for "human reasons" on things that provided for their needs. "When the Bible uses the word 'repentance', it doesn't just mean beating your breast, it means getting a new perspective, and that is perhaps what we are shrinking away from."
The Archbishop added: "If this is going to drive us back into the same spin, I do not think that is going to help us."
