6. Politics involved in race with Atty. Gen. Jack Conway, running for Bunning's

Senate seat. He is the Democrats' best man, vs. Mongiardo(d) & Grayson(r) & Paul(?) the tea bagger in May Primary. His horse Stately Victor was upset winner in the Bluegrass Stakes. The DU sentimental favorite @ 30-1. Conway will be the most anxious politician at the Derby.
"To make the walk from the barns to the paddock on Derby Day will be a special moment with my dad that I will never forget," he said.
Conway said his father grew up on a farm in Union County "and always dreamed of owning a horse that would one day run in the Kentucky Derby.

Been to three Darby's. '80-'82. Had a fucking ball at every one. Our first year- carried a half barrel on ice in a plastic trash can. With a dozen crabs (the eating kind) on top to make us appear as suave gentlemen. I miss it.

The weather service said 2 to 3 inches of rainfall are possible Saturday in areas west of Interstate 65, including Louisville. Areas east of I-65, including Lexington and Central and Eastern Kentucky, could receive 1 to 2 inches Saturday.

14. Excellent question. I doubt it, though.

Only two big days of racing a year for the networks, and we all know who's in charge there. Travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, etc. I agree that the safety of the animals should be priority #1, but unfortunately we all know it's not.

They'd probably require a monsoon to even consider postponing.

The 11:00 Lex TV says it will be a sloppy track.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Derby could be run under the
lights for the first time on Saturday.
Heavy rain is expected and if visibility is poor, Churchill
Downs will turn on its newly installed lights for the first time on
Derby Day.
"It could be blinkers off and lights on," said Bob Baffert,
trainer of the 3-1 favorite Lookin At Lucky and 12-1 shot
Conveyance.
Banks of lights now encircle the venerable track. They were
installed to accommodate night racing during the summer, and are
sometimes used for early morning training. They can employed at any
time - even for the Derby.
"It is an option that we do have," track spokesman Darren
Rogers said Friday.
There are no restrictions in the race conditions barring the use
of artificial light. The first 135 runnings of the classic for
3-year-olds were conducted in daylight. Churchill Downs hopes to
continue that tradition when the horses go to the post at 6:24 p.m.

That might not be realistic. The National Weather Service
predicts showers and thunderstorms Saturday with periods of heavy
rain totaling 1 to 2 inches.

Just cause I saw a story about how 24 regular joes own him..The cost of sale was about 10,000---each owner paid about $450 for him! Makes me think someday I could own a horse in part...:)

22. I think Eskendereya would have clobbered that field

2:04.45 is very slow, and the early fractions were rapid. I'm sure there will be discussion that the final mile of the race was the slowest in decades. I remember Cannonade ran 2:04 in 1974. This might be the slowest since that point.

Borel is now a legend.

Great pick by everyone who took Super Saver. He dropped from 15-1 to 7-1 and only a small portion was the $100,000 bet.

I hate that a horse with that cheap and uninspiring name won the Derby. I barely looked at that horse, probably because of the name. Dumb me.

Let's hope many of the trail horses contest the Preakness. Noble's Promise looks like a hard trying second tier type, always destined to fall short in top company, but a troubled horse like Lookin at Lucky could move forward. Ice Box will probably point to the Belmont but that doesn't always work out for a Derby late running near miss.
