Showtime, MLB announce S.F. Giants reality show
sfgate.com (Henry Schulman) / 1-14-11

... Major League Baseball Productions announced it has teamed with Showtime to created a "new, unscripted series featuring unprecedented team access with the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants."

MLB Production cameras will be "embedded" (their word) with the Giants all season to gather video for a show that will run during the second half of the 2011 season, after a preview episode at the start of the year. That means in the clubhouse and in the players' homes.

Showtime surely will want some controversy, and they already have some. (I) just talked to Matt Cain, the Giants' player rep. While he is 100 percent behind the series, and said other players are on board, too, he confessed to being a bit miffed about today's announcement because in his mind all the details have not been worked out.

"Honestly, they announced it early," Cain said. "They weren't supposed to do that and we aren't very happy about it. We're trying to figure out all the small details.

This has the potential for being a huge mistake. I don't like it. Not one bit.

1. With success comes crap like this..
I don't like this either. I wish the Giants had said no. Sounds like a major distraction. I want them concentrating on defending their WS title not worried about how they look for some TV show..

2. Be sure to put locker room discussions on a seven-second delay
Baseball players have a tendency to pronounce FCC phonetically.

The late George Carlin's best-known stand up routine was about the seven words you can't say on television. He also did a routine about oxymorons (rush hour? -- military intelligence?). Now imagine Carlin saying with perfect timing reality television?

4. I'm conflicted. I know that I'll watch, but I'll feel guilty if this affects their game.
I wish it were a team I didn't care about. But then, I wouldn't watch.
