Poll question: Should Mark McGwire be in the Hall of Fame?
It appears that Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken will be (rightfully) elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in a landslide and McGwire will be left out this time around, one of the main reasons being given his alleged steroid use. McGwire was a one dimensional ballplayer without a doubt, but the hardest thing to do in sports is hitting a baseball, and hitting it a long way is even tougher. He is seventh in all time home runs and imo, deserves to be in the Hall.

6. rules of baseball
No rules of baseball but it IS illegal in this country to use or possess steroids without a a valid doctors prescription. I don't like lawbreakers..

8.  Steroids and other drugs were against baseball's rules during McGwire's career
But there was no testing until after he retired.

12. Its my understanding that amphetamines weren't banned until 2006.
The theory has always been that they were not performance-enhancing, but rather performance-enabling.

13. still illegal, without a prescription
same as steroids at the time.

either let Mac in, or basically admit that no one who played in the 90's gets in.

4. Yes
He (and no doubt other players) did not break the rules of baseball as they existed at the time he was playing.

7. McGwire at least has justification
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 12:27 PM by Indy_Dem_Defender
over Bonds in getting accepted into the hall just by the fact he was always considered a homerun hitter from his first season. That is unless he's taken steriods from the start of his career which if you look at 87 to 88 there is a big difference in the size of his arms. Bonds doesn't even look the same his head just expands like crazy from 88 to 2001 that isn't normal, his arms are almost double in size from 1987.

McGwire in 1987 - Rookie Year 49 Homeruns

McGwire in 1988

McGwire in 1999 year

compared to Bonds
In 1987 2nd year 25 homeruns

in 1988 24 homeruns

in 2001 73 homeruns

9. Mistakes Being Made

I think people are making a mistake in saying that Bonds used steroids due to the difference in his size between 1987 to 2001. It is possible for a man to put on about 50 pounds of muscle weight in one year. 1987 to 2001 is a fourteen year span. If Bonds put on 50 pounds a year he could have added 200 pounds of muscle in that time span. I think when people look at Bonds over the years it is easy to see that he grew gradually. In addition, I think many people fail to realize that Bonds is a guy who has hit 40 plus home runs a season for many years. Bonds has eight 40 plus home run seasons.

14. bonds was a better hitter overall
and a better fielder than Mac ever was. remember, Barry was MVP in 90, 92 and 93 and an all star every year from 1990-1998 (except 91) before he bulked up. on that alone he should get in.

16. Nope and not just because of the juice.
Terrible average and couldn't field his position. He's just not a hall of fame player.
