(GA) Bill to gather sex offenders' email addresses passes Senate
A bill that cracks down on Internet predators unanimously passed the Senate Thursday.

The bill forces sex offenders to submit their e-mail addresses to authorities and requires Internet service providers to offer parents the ability to block certain Web sites.

Senate Bill 474, sponsored by Sen. Cecil Staton (R-Macon), also requires schools to offer an annual course on online safety to students in grades three and higher.

It is the second bill Staton has introduced aimed at tightening parental controls and curbing access to cyberspace for sexual predators.

Last session, he proposed legislation that would make it illegal for social networking Web sites Myspace and Facebook to allow minors to create or update online profiles without parental permission. That bill did not make it to the floor and industry officials said it would be nearly impossible to enforce. The new bill is a good compromise, Staton said.

If you believe these state bills that encroach on Internet rights will only target predators, I have a bridge that you can buy.

1. :eyes:
Yeah, it's not like new email addresses are hard to come by. Nobody lies about who they are on the intarweb :eyes: You gotta love legislation written by people who have no idea what they're talking about...

2. Who could believer sex offenders can't get email that isn't easy to trace?
Sounds like the legislators could use some tech support from some of the 12 year olds I know who have 'secret' email accounts their folks know nothing about.

3. talk about stupid
well... stupid regarding stated goals.
Email addresses and websites are *extremely transitory so this is like spitting in the wind.

On the other hand, it *is getting their foot in the regulatory door regarding the net.... which may be the ultimate goal.
