Four Loko (alcoholic energy drink) to be banned nation-wide |
|
Four Loko Dec. 13 Nationwide Ban – By December fourth the alcoholic caffeinated drink called “Four Loko” that has attracted so much popularity as well as controversy will be officially taken off the shelves nationwide by mid December on the 13th.
Thanks to a number of people across the country that have been rallying against the drink, it has been quickly disappearing off shelves in multiple states. A few of the places in the U.S that have banned it outright are Michigan, New York, and Rhode Island.
Even many convenience store owners are not supporting the drink or having it shipped to their stores because of what it could mean for young drinkers due to the caffeine put in it.
Although Four Loko had agreed to remove the caffeine from their drinks, apparently that wasn’t good enough for those who just wanted it gone.
Warning letters were sent out to manufacturers of the drink, telling them that their product has to be off the shelves around the country by December 13th or else they will face the consequences. The controversy with the drink first started when there began a number of hospitalizations related to college students who were consuming the caffeine alcoholic drink to stay away for purposes of partying, ultimately leading to its end in the U.S market.

2. Why? Does it cure cancer? |
|
Okay, that was tongue in cheek, but if a cure for cancer was discovered, you can bet it would be protected so someone could make a billion dollars instead of letting people use it freely.

I'll just keep mixing my redbull and vodkas at home. I heard Four Loko tasted disgusting anyway.

In Raleigh I have already seen some new underground products coming up to replace the caffeinated alcoholic beverages. Whenever we start prohibiting things it doesn't stop the behavior, it just drive the behavior underground. It's better to regulate and tax it to curtail the effects of the behavior and give us revenue we need at the moment.

8. Four Loko tastes like rancid kool-aid, and hits you like a nail driver. I support the ban.... |
|
The combo of high alcohol content, high sugar content, high caffeine content, plus Guarana
These boyo's retail for about $2, have the alcohol content of 4 bottles of beer, the caffeine content of 4 cups of coffee, plus Guarana and sugar.
I'm a middle-aged, experienced drinker, who checked these drinks out. I can tell you true, you have no idea how drunk you are getting on these drinks.
2 cans, and I was ready to drive a road-trip to the coast. Fortunately, I had friends around me who weren't whacked on Four-Loko.
Of course, anyone is free to mix brandy and coffee, or Red Bull and vodka, to get the same effect. But that's intentional. With four-loko, you feel like you're drinking a bad soda, and end up feeling like an extra in a Rob Zombie film.
And yes, I think these drinks should be banned.

I read the "study" (for very loose definition of the word) in JAMA on it, and it's SO clear the medical community has a hard-on to get this shit banned, it's ridiculous. Yes, caffeine subdues the subjective perception of intoxication. This has been the case forever, and people have been mixing the two forever. It's just as "intentional" when you drink a 4 Loko or a Red Bull and Vodka. In both cases, you are drinking something knowingly and intentionally with a stimulant/depressant combo.
