A 53-year-old Navy reservist and former pilot collapsed and died Tuesday while training as an individual augmentee in South Carolina, a Navy spokeswoman said.
Cmdr. Joseph M. Salkeld, of Argyle, Texas, collapsed after a one-mile walk shortly after dawn at Fort Jackson, where the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command conducts combat training, said Susan Henson, a spokeswoman for NECC.
The Navy activated Salkeld for one year of IA duty, and he was scheduled for an overseas deployment, Henson said.
He was treated immediately and given CPR on the scene by a Navy doctor, nurse and a drill sergeant who was trained as a combat lifesaver.
Salkeld was pronounced dead at 9:22 a.m. at a hospital in Columbia, Henson said.
