JK's Quote from Sunday's MTP taken utterly out of context on GD forum!
Edited on Wed Aug-10-11 06:13 PM by ObamaKerryDem
My apologies in advance if this has already been posted/discussed in the Super Committee thread, but..

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1704282

*sigh* And it's starting to be picked up elsewhere too (someone on my Facebook, for example, just made a status out of this...I am in the process of rebutting on their comments as I write this..)

And the fact that this is coming from fellow Democrats/progressives..double sigh! SO frustrating..

I mean, yes, I suppose he could've worded that particular part differently--though I think he was terrific on Sunday's MTP overall and anyone who actually watched the whole thing all the way through, could discern what he was getting at..but that is precisely the problem. People like--or at least are used to--the soundbite perfect media culture. And the use of ellipses made the 'soundbite' here, unfortunately..

:(

not surprising.

These folks should spend more time attacking Brownie.

Which is probably very good, but it was very clear it would happen. I cringed when I heard Kerry. It will pass.

I actually called it on Sunday. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=273&topic_id=170460&mesg_id=170484 When will they learn?

3. Does this OP have a history of anti-Kerry threads?
I admittedly have not ventured much outside of this forum on DU lately, so I really am in the dark in this sense, lol. :)

What bothers me is that it's popping up outside of DU as well (like on Facebook). Sure, that is probably where they got it from..but still. I hope this doesn't get "legs", especially now with JK on this Super Committee, which I knew from the start would make him a target for some in this sense.

It just goes back to a long history of a certain element of Dems/progressives not understanding/appreciating JK and unfairly lumping him in with 'the rest'. I know none of us can fully control that, but it's just so frustrating!

I mean, I would've expected this kind of twisting of words on free republic, not DU. But I guess I am (perhaps blissfully) naive to that side of it. :)

5. Usual suspect. Lefty against Kerry and Obama and most Dems in general.

Now, if you want to know why Kerry was wrong the other day, here is an example, and contrarily to this poster, I respect campaign for America's Future a lot.

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/orlando_opinionators/2011/08/supercommittee-already-getting-slammed.html

The liberal Campaign for America’s Future condemned John Kerry’s selection because he dared to praise an earlier budget deal that would have included controls on the costs of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. You know, that vast and wildly expensive portion of the national budget some say shouldn’t be touched. CAF went after Max Baucus because they don’t like his votes on tax issues.

I have not read what CAF wrote, but I suspect that they were not too happy with the grand bargain, particularly given the lack of clarity president Obama gave about what he would accept. There are real issues there and pols should be careful about what they say. I actually hope this gets legs (pretty unhappy it is against Kerry), if anything to make clear that people are mobilized against cuts on Medicare, Medicaid, and SS.

6. Interesting. Wonder
who their candidates are or who they endorsed (not that it matters much), but that too bad that they are against Kerry. The WH should have known what the fallout would be.

Have not been much help to the K group or the Senator of late, so will just see how this plays out. Wishing him all the best because this does not look like an easy (nothing is ever easy in politics!) job.

Hope your health is good also. Peace. :hi:

12. Glad to hear
Best wishes to you, YvonneCa, Momma T and others fighting this disease. :grouphug:

Guess you could say along that line. But HRC would have been too centrist for that group. That said, I would like to know more about what Kerry is saying here also, but will leave that up to the good people (like yourself. :)) in this group to keep me informed. :hi:

14. Your call was good
but at least on DU it was the op refusing to consider all other comments - more detailed in nature. The dilemma is Kerry is always accused of being too wordy. But the problem of not qualifying everything is this happens.

9. Here is something else I dislike.

http://www.kgwn.tv/story/15246419/former-senator-talks-about

Simpson voiced his disapproval of two of the three senate democrats picked so far for this committee. He spoke earlier today about Senators Max Baucus of Montana and Patty Murray of Washington.

He says when he worked along side Baucus, he felt he rarely participated in committee activities or meetings and seemed to be continually holding back.

This debt committee is charged with cutting the deficit by at least 1.5 trillion dollars over the next decade. Now 9 of the 12 members are set.

"When you see the extremes in there, it's going take a while to establish trust, but they
don't have three months to establish trust," said Simpson.

Simpson did however give a thumbs up to Harry Reid's third pick, John Kerry, saying "he will do good work" on the committee.

Now, it is clear that the reason Simpson welcomes Kerry is because he thinks Kerry will cave and the two other ones will not (Baucus was a NO vote on the Simpson commission). This endorsement will be held against Kerry.

11. Sen. Kerry may well compromise, but he will not sell out our social programs.
But, IMO, this committee is DOA just based on the hardliners appointed by the Repubs. What I don't want to see is Democrats compromises and Republicans not giving an inch. Actually, I am going to do some research tonight and see if I can find out just what the triggers are.

15. I actually took Simpson's words
as a sign of respect for Kerry. I know about Simpson's "minuses" but he is smart and he is strongly in favor of a compromise that increases revenues. I may disagree with much, but do not consider him "the enemy". I also find his unusual way of talking amusing, but that's besides the point.

the programs he mentions do need an over-haul to accommodate the large population of Baby Boomer's. Some Progressives need to chill a bit. Did they really think Sanders-who is not a Democrat-would be picked for the committee?

16. Seeing the list of people selected by Pelosi, the Democrats will be establisment.
Edited on Thu Aug-11-11 12:14 PM by Mass
Sadly, none of the populist leaning members are being represented. I would have liked to see somebody like Brown or Merkley or their equivalent in the House there, as they are generally less inclined to accept the RW meme about deficits. But we'll have to live with that.

This said, given who the GOPers are, it is more likely that the trigger will be pulled. I do not see people like Kyl, Toomey, ... accept an acceptable compromise.

Other point: talk of the rule of white men. 1 women, 1 black man.
