Crop question
This little lady was chattering up a storm as she and her mom left the library yesterday afternoon. I found the scene to be irresistible, so I snapped a pic. I'm not a photographer, but I like the way this one turned out. I'm wondering if I've chosen the best crop, and I invite input from those who know what the heck they're doing. Thanks, by the way!

1. This is tricky
You want to get in a bit closer and yet not lose the composition. I think I would try cropping just before the middle shadows, right at the edge of the grey sidewalk. I want to see a bit more walk than your crop has shown. I would also straighten it.

;) You seem to suffer from the same malady that I do–one leg shorter than the other, but only while holding the cameras.

2. Go even tighter if the resolution supports it.
Lose the white trailer on the left, lose the white car on the right, lose the big branch on the top, lose more sidewalk. You can choose to emphasize where they are going vs coming from by choosing to show more trees than sidewalk or vice versa.

What are you cropping for? The Web? A Print?

I did a 5 x 7 crop and adjusted the perspective a bit. I'm also a a Black & White-aholic. The shadows across the sidewalk really make this photo. Your subject is important to the image but the 'path' is what takes the eye to your subject. I'm not big on rules but I slapped a 'Rule of Thirds' grid on this so you can see how everything fits within the grid.

You might try crouching down or sitting down the next time a photo of this type presents itself to you. Just a suggestion.

Edit: I put the wrong photo on here.
:dunce:

5. I agree with your approach. It really doesn't need cropping
It's a real good composition as is. A bit of rotation is the only major change needed.

Converging lines draw the eye to the couple. The mother's head is lost in the dark background, but the mind of the viewers will add it.

4. I knew you'd deliver!
Finally had a chance to play a bit more with this, per your commentary and suggestions. The pic itself was serendipitous, I was waiting for my ride and had hands full of posters, cane and oxygen, and barely got the camera out of my pocket in time to snap the pic before the subjects were too far away.

The sidewalk does have a slight tilt to it, but yes, it does look better with the photo straightened. I don't know how to do photoshop so I rather crudely removed the white trailer at the far end of the walkway; it's absence does improve the impact.

So, how's it coming along?
