Road trip - Denali Highway
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 09:55 PM by Blue_In_AK
Thursday we drove up to Byers Lake, camped out overnight and then drove across the Denali Highway the next day. Our plan was to camp a second night, but we got rained out and had to drive all the way home in one shot - 500 miles, 125 unpaved. Photo ops were pretty good, though, even in the rain.

This is Byers Lake early in the morning when it looked like we were going to have a nice day.

A rare clear view of Denali

1. I cannot imagine such a trek. You must be exhausted. Beautiful visuals,
I adore the first one of the lake, with the water line so clearly delineated at the trees' feet. It looks like it's steaming.
Once, in Costa Rica, I was on an unpaved road going to Mesa Verde -45 kilometers / 4 hours- We had a flat and rode on it for miles, three in the car, none of us noticed. Fixed it. Went on and the ride did not improve.
Just tellin' what "unpaved" means in my experience.
LOL

2. Lovely!
We're looking into a train trip in Alaska. Starting out in Washington state...then a ferry...then the train trip. Still gathering all the details. Next year some time.

You're the reason...your photos. You.

3. Oh, yea!
The tourism board will love me. :) I think you would be taking the ferry to Seward probably or maybe Whittier, and then catching the train to Anchorage. Then there's the other train that goes from Anchorage to Talkeetna to Denali Park to Fairbanks. When you're in Anchorage, we'll get together for sure. I'd love to meet you.

4. My MIL is looking into all the details for us. She lives in Washington.
From what I gather there is a route through Denali...and another one. Can't recall. Kinda like a cruise, with stops....only on a train. We're hoping to make it happen. My MIL will be going along, of course. She's turned into quite the traveler as she's gotten older.
