When Fran and Casey Gaik got a barrage of harassing e-mails, found they had been put under surveillance and discovered their Oak Brook house had been entered while they were away, they couldn't exactly call the cops.
A cop was doing it, the Gaiks say.
What was their crime? They spoke up at village meetings and in public. snip
Many criminal background checks were run on the Gaiks and their daughters by Mucha or cops in neighboring towns, records show. A deputy U.S. marshal, under investigation for allegedly leaking information in a mob case, also ran background checks on the Gaiks -- for no conceivable purpose. The U.S. marshal in Chicago, Kim Widup, had no comment. The ties between Mucha and the officers could not be determined.
