Stop calling it a "Surge"!
Everyone must call it what is really is: An escalation of the occupation.

"Surge" is another word the Repukes like to use to camouflage the real agenda, and to make it sound better.

It's escalation. Not matter how many times the Repukes and the corrupt M$M use "surge", that's not what it is.

Escalation: (DOD) A deliberate or unpremeditated increase in scope or violence of a conflict.

2. One need NEVER seek greater proof of their dishonesty.
It's as if they fear admitting the truth. They are surely the wrong people to be running this country's business.

4. When I say "surge" I think "surge" right before a lightbulb blows.
I understand the need to avoid the "search and destroy" vs "sweep and clear" symantec manipulation. In this case, though, I don't think anyone is fooled except those who are fooled no matter what it's called.

"Surge" also reminds me, in this context, of something like a military "Hail Mary" play.

5. Totally agree. We called it "escalation" in Vietnam. Same here.
Unbelievable Orwellian acceptance of terminology by the gutless media. "Surge" indeed. It's increasing the number of troops in a battle zone. It is escalation - we are escalating our numbers in Iraq. Also, "temporary" my ass. We have seen this before, from leaders who, although bad, were no where near the complete evil Bushco represents. Don't let them get away with their own terms. Escalation, not surge.

7. A "Surge" is manly. An "Escalation" is intellectual.
You can tell by the number or syllables.

The White House and Fox News watchers don't trust too many syllables.

10. It should be "The Urge"
... that's all there is to it really. Stupidity in its purest form, untainted by reason. The crowning achievement of an Administration of Urges.

13. Sounds haphazard like a losing gambler chasing a bad bet.
As long as we are talking about bad euphemisms I'd rather be discussing "re-deployment".

16. "Escalation" is already...
taken to define the violence in Iraq. I don't mind the word 'surge'...it is what it is...more soldiers than ever going to Iraq.

19. It's subconscious
Surge brings to mind the male orgasm with the emphasis on the male part of it. This administration speaks to it's faithful in macho terms. Escalation brings to mind the scariness of sending more troops to increase the violence and while that's also macho, it is less comforting.

Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 11:25 PM by tavalon
How else do you think Bush got the stupid male vote? Don't underestimate the power of the phallus or at least phallic imagery and the insecure male. Rather than being knee jerk about it, just think about it for a while. Read some Lakoff while you're at it.

28. Idiots talk to other idiots, then vote
This is the most important task we have, to learn to use words that create an accurate visual. Surge implies short term forward movement, people will accept it and some people will get a gung ho thrill out of it. Escalation implies spiraling out of control, and avoidable. This is very important.

How can you think the words they use aren't carefully selected after 'shock and awe' and 'stay the course' and 'cut and run'. The only way they win is to beat us with visual marketing strategies. They write for radio, painting mental pictures with words that become permanently stamped in the pscyhe.

24. The tide surges, war escalates
To me a surge implies more of a natural largening, a swelling or billowing, rolling like waves, to rise or move ahead, where escalate has a more manmade negative fighting connotation, to increase in extent or intensity, to intensify.

These republican filth believe that the viet nam war was 'almost won'
by operation rolling thunder.... they're hiding the new crime, and
creating a false dialectic about troop deployments to hide any discussion
of the real decision that was taken to mass murder civilians with blunt weapons.

22. Yes, the term surge was created by the Bush administration
I never once heard anyone refer to any possible escalation of the war as a "surge" until the Bush administration started calling it that, and then suddenly that is what all the major "news" organizations called it. They are always so happy to repeat the Bush talking points.
