"Um what part, whats his/her name" "Oh you know down south there and i think his name is Frank" or Judy. I don't think people understand how big ca is or how many people are here until they visit.

ever actually live here.

You couldn't pay me enough to live on the East Coast, or in Colorado, for that matter. Yeah, we have Earthquakes- and fires sometimes, too. But it's something you live with, a regional fact of life: same as hurricanes, tornadoes, shitty-ass blizzards or Tom DeLay.

California is a big place. Huge swaths of it never worry about fire, earthquakes, mudslides or whatever.

I'm in one of 'em. It's a flood plain, though I'm on a high spot and even in bad years have never had worse than a soggy lawn. No place is perfect.

28. It does crack me up when people from elsewhere come up with reasons why they'd never live in CA
Usually it's earthquakes. I don't live on a fault. I'm a lifelong Californian and I've never felt an earthquake. Some people in my neighborhood felt the Loma Prieta quake in '89, but I was in a car and it was already a bit rumbly so I didn't.

The other thing is the cost of living. Now things cost more here, but wages are decent, groceries and utilities are very cheap where I live, and I'm in one of California's less expensive cities, so that doesn't really apply.

This is my home and I love it. But it's crowded, so everybody else should stay wherever they happen to be from. The earthquakes here will kill you, you know. ;)

and staying here! I don't have to shovel snow, the humidity is low in the summer, and where I live has really clean air. In what other place can one find both good Thai food and good Mexican food, even in a rural community? Oh, and I need to mention, the county is producing its own wines.

Laugh at our fires, storms and earthquakes if you must. Some of us call this "home" and are happy here.

that Mother Nature can't have an effect on...hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons etc. I guess it could be said that people are crazy living anywhere but you have to be somewhere. Where I am in CA the only worry is earthquakes but I still prefer that to lot's of other things that Mother Nature could dish out. I try not to be so smug about the things that other people in other places deal with cause next time I might be the one with a problem. x(

You don't draw shit. We got a nice quiet beach community here, and I aim to keep it nice and quiet. So let me make something plain. I don't like you sucking around bothering our citizens, Lebowski. I don't like your jerk-off name, I don't like your jerk-off face, I don't like your jerk-off behavior, and I don't like you, jerk-off -- do I make myself clear?

The Dude: I'm sorry, I wasn't listening.

-Police chief throws coffee mug, hitting The Dude in the head-

The Dude: OW! Fucking fascist!

-Police chief knocks The Dude's chair over-

STAY OUT OF MALIBU LEBOWSKI!

-Police chief kicks The Dude while he's on the ground-

STAY OUT OF MALIBU, DEADBEAT!

Keep your ugly, fucking, gold-bricking ass out of my beach community!

---

Sorry, Lebowski quotes always take precedence over good taste. I hope nobody gets hurt in the fires.

community was threatened a year ago by huge fires in the adjacent hills. The flames came damn close, but the firefighters did a heroic job of keeping them from homes. Fires are a fact of life in Southern California which has much mountainous terrain. People here know and accept the risks.

38. Best of luck to all the residents.
We have horrendous wildfires here in summer, but the population is so small, rarely does a lot of damage occur. I'd send SoCal some of our weather if I could - but unfortunately, not even 38 below can stop a fire. We have bad housefires (usually woodstoves or toyo heaters) every winter and our firefighters have it tough at these temps.

Good wishes, Malibu.

AT least that's what I heard this morning. (Also Suzanne Somers and I missed who else)

It's sad...of course most if not all of those people have insurance and enough money to rebuild and buy "things."

But we all - rich, poor and in-between - have memories, pictures, mementos that cannot be replaced with any amount of money.

And I really hope no pets were lost.

Everyone loves to crack on them, but I have lived in North and Southern Cal, and I can tell you straight out that Californians are amongst the best people in this nation. They are open-minded, reasonable, and they have a sunny outlook on life.

I hope and pray that everyone in Malibu comes out of this disaster okay.
