Contrary to an Internet report, Republicans in the House of Representatives appear to have asked for a day off less than one week into the 110th Congress, RAW STORY has learned. The Democratic leadership consented, and no action is scheduled on the House floor today.

Congress will not meet today to begin the official "100 hours" agenda of the Democratic Members due to a request put in to the Democratic Leadership by Rep. John Boehner, the Republican Minority Leader in the House of Representatives.

"Mr. Boehner made this request, and in the interest of comity, Democrats granted it," a senior Democratic aide told RAW STORY.

Late Sunday afternoon, news portal operator Matt Drudge displayed a large banner headline on his Website set in capital letters which claimed, "DEM VOW ALREADY BROKEN: HOUSE SETS 4-DAY WORK WEEK." Drudge accused the Democrats of shutting down the House because of the College Football National Championship being played tonight between top teams Ohio State University and the University of Florida in Arizona.

I read the thread and all linked thoughts to it. Sports at a level above high school are a complete waste of time, effort and money. This is especially true for baseball, basketball, football and hockey. They are big business and a recruitment tool for the colleges. Their reputations are being built on how good their teams do, not how well their graduates do.

Professional sports are worst. Spoiled, over hyped, over paid thugs (not in all cases) are paid to preform for the enjoyment of the masses. I have for years maintained that the sh$t that the players and teams get away with only happens because Congress wants joe-sixpack to focus there rather then on how little they do.

I'm well aware that I'm part of a very small minority that feels this way. I feel they should have kept their promise and taken a break in work for the game if they had to. Not take the whole day off.

Seriously. I was thinking about this the other day watching the end of the Pats game, and all the people going nuts after the win. Team rivalries like this are a modern form of tribalism. We're a "civilized" society now, but we're still the same animals. As such, we have certain tribal instincts, and "belonging" is very, very important to most people. If there were no large organized sporting events, all those tribal mentalities would have to align themselves with something. Case in point: the Middle East, still mired in centuries-old tribal struggles. Why? Well, the reasons are long and varied, of course, and I know I am way over-simplifying it, but I posit it is because they have no other choice. No other vent. No other way to show allegiances to anything, to show that they BELONG. It is a fundamental need, if you will (need probably isn't the right term) to belong.

In any large society -- we have 300,000,000 people here, remember -- you have to keep the masses busy. That is why jobs, families, all the group structures are so important. You have to keep the minds occupied with harmless activities, productive activities, just keep 'em busy. Again, look to the ME to see what happens when you have millions of people with nothing but time on their hands.

Anyway, this wasn't meant to be a Masters thesis, so don't go all hyper-critical on me. I'm just sayin'...I may hate organized sports (and organized religion, and organization in general! LOL!) but I'm not willing to go so far as to say they're a waste of time. They serve a purpose. They allow us to stay in touch with our tribal routes, and keep our minds off of thinking about warring against the other tribes...we play "war games" instead.

I think it sends a very irresponsible message that watching (not necessarily attending) a sporting event is more important than showing up for work. If something is important enough for congress to take the day off, then shouldn't we all have the day off?

At first I was upset, but Pelosi made a comment that this gives them time to read the legislation, a complaint that the Rs were making last week regarding the rules...they didn't have time to read it. Now they have been given time to read it and if their priorities were to party around a football games, then the cannot complain. If they do complain, they deserve ridicule.
