Poll question: HOT TOPIC of the day: Cut off Iraq funding?
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 01:34 PM by lvasconcellos
Dems are split (why does this not surprise me)on Iraq

The big issue today (Franken, NPR et al) is on Kennedy's proposal to cut funding for an increase in troops. What's DU's take on it?

Remember, by law Congress can
1. limit the nature of troop deployments
2. cap the size of military deployments
3. cut financing for existing or prospective deployments

I would like to see Democrats:

1. Rep. Jim McGovern's proposal has been to halt all funding for the war.
and only fund the troops safe return. That must be the agenda of this congress.
They should also make a new resolution opposing US troops presence in Iraq, demanding their safe return, and supporting all troops who refuse to deploy.

2. The problem is that Shrub just moves $$ around to be able to do
whatever he wants. I know he's not supposed to be able to do that, but he's done it before. That's one of the reasons a lot of the intelligence funds are appropriated to the DOD budget. Intel funds are always secret, so noone would ever know if the DID snagged some $$ frin intel to pay Halliburton!

3. Then all the more grounds to impeach. Let's not abaondon our troops
If congress says funds will not be made available for funding the war, and bush does it anyway, then its not like its going to be unnoticed.

Let's not abandon our troops to the whims of Bush & Co. We must demand their return, not wait for a Bush plan.

5. I'm afraid you're right
I think cutting off his money would only make him keep up his war on the really, really cheap, and our soldiers will have even less equipment than they have now.

In principle, I think it's a great idea, but I think it might backfire on our soldiers.

6. I agree. Just get us the heck out. And now! Enough is enough.
We know our president is a psychopath, what are we waiting for? I can't even believe the Dems are split. Maybe my pessimistic mother is right about how much the Dems will do in the next two years.

Lets keep those phone calls and letters going out to our reps.

7. It doesn't matter
The Chimp in Chief has already told us that his constitutional authority to conduct the war supersedes acts of congress. It is absurd to think that talk and paperwork will stop this war. Even impeachment is too slow to achieve much. By the time the house got through impeaching BOTH the pres and vice pres, and the senate gets through with two trials, it will be late in 2008.

Face it, this war will last until a Dem is in the White house.
