O'Reilly, Colbert to appear on each other's shows

NEW YORK (AP) -- It may feel like looking into the mirror for Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert next week.

The Fox News Channel host and Colbert, who has essentially based his comic character every evening on Comedy Central on him, will trade appearances on each other's programs January 18.

"I'm really looking forward to speaking to a man who owes his entire career to me," O'Reilly said.

Stephen is going to have fun with this one! I saw O'reilly on the Daily Show - he's no match for Jon OR Stephen. Jon did go easy on him, at least the first time, because Jon is always civil in his interviews, but he could easily have crushed him.

O'Reilly has always insisted he is not a Republican but an independant and is trying to prove that-plus I hear he thinks he has a great sense of humor. The practitioners come on camera and berate, insult, and criticize one another in order to rile up their respective "base".

But once the cameras are off you can probably find most of the players that were engaged in "combat" on camera patting each other on the back and trading stories at the local bar.

fits what Colbert did to Bush at the Washington correspondents' dinner. I know what you're referring to...and it fits the Chris Matthews/Joe Scarborough/Bob Novak type of "debate". Once the cameras are switched off, they all head to the bar together and laugh about how they're jacking up the audience.
But, I don't think Colbert fits into that category.
What he did to Bush...to his face...was not the genial "wrasslin" you're describing. It was bare-knuckled fist fighting. And Bush was not at all in on the playful "combat".

Correspondents' Dinner after his searing vivesection of both gwb and the spineless media. That was as clear as statement as anything he said that night.

I don't think he necessarily despises O'liely as much as needs to keep his distance.

After seeing the 60 Minutes interview with him, I'm convinced that he has clarity and recognition of the pitfalls of fame and notoriety. And one pitfall would be "off duty" schmoozing will the very folks upon whom he bases his rapier wit.

and this is your use of the adjective "searing". Colbert is not going for warm and cuddly. Stewart does the gentlemanly bit. And that's great. It works.
But Colbert at the correspondents' dinner was something else. And it was not "gentlemanly". And he has been criticized for that.
Colbert has a sharp intelligence and his wit is acerbic and honed. He can be ruthless. And we're not used to that -- at least, not from a liberal.
I believe he has a fair amount of anger that is driving him. And that's great.
Right now, complacency is our enemy.
We need challengers who wield sharp weapons.
Colbert is energizing people. He refuses to let the right shape the dialogue. He refuses to let the outrageous lies stand.
The time for good manners has, alas, elapsed. We're now at a very dangerous crossroads and we need people like Colbert who are fearless.
I am eternally grateful to him for his speech at the correspondents' dinner.

Because O'Reilly is right, perhaps for the first time in his career; Colbert owes his entire career to him. Now follow along with this...

In some venues Colbert comes out from behind his commentator persona to speak his real mind. He is a decent guy with progressive principles.

To prove he is more than just a bad O'Reilly impressionist, when he appears on O'Reilly's show, he will probably drop the "Colberrrrr Reporrrrr" persona and try to appear as a real person, upset at Fox and O'Reilly's mangling of the truth.

That's when O'Reilly will yell "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! CUT HIS MIKE!" and have the Fox security guards drag him away and beat him into a bloody pulp.

Sorry, Colbert. You don't deal with Satan. You don't even tell him to "get thee behind me" because he'll snatch your wallet and anally rape you. (Which, if you'd seen "South Park," you'd know is a standard feature of Satan's behavior.) The only winning move is not to play. Call off this deal and save your teeth.

Colbert will definitely stay in his O'Reilly doppleganger character. Just as he did, brilliantly, as the speaker at the Washington press club dinner...with Bush sitting within a few feet of him.
Remember, Colbert has years of improv experience. He thinks on his feet. Which you've seen on his show. He's very quick. I don't think O'Reilly will even know what is happening...though O'Reilly is clearly a savvy guy. But, O'Reilly also relies heavily on staff, editing his taped show, and his teleprompter (for his "facts"). O'Reilly is clearly reading on his show. He doesn't have his "facts" in his head. They're printed in front of him. That's why he is always so stumbly on talk shows.
Colbert will be much faster.
I don't think O'Reilly will be able to match Colbert and will have to resort to his usual bluster, arm waving, red-faced outrage, and hyperbole -- to cover his inability to keep up.

The two will be totally different.

Colbert will control the proceedings on his show. Bill will try to be funny, quick, and witty; but, he'll be stiff and boring.

On The Factor, O'Reilly will try to pin Colbert down on either issues or the "real" Colbert. We'll see what happens, but it will still be uncomfortably stiff.
