At yesterday`s anti-war rally in Montpelier, Vermont, one speaker suggested that nobody should leave without gathering twenty email addresses. I started thinking about the collective power amassed in that one action and the possibility of average citizens joining forces to end the war in Iraq. This isn`t about attending an occasional rally, it`s about committing to gathering strength and applying pressure every single day. Determined citizens played a major role in ending the Vietnam War. Could we adopt similar peaceable tactics to force Bush to end the Iraq War?
How could we connect with like-minded groups? Could we request a War Room here at DU for activism suggestions, actions taken, requests for assistance? Could we do an ongoing Letter to the Editor drive? Set time aside to contact our representatives? Could we call on citizens to post a sign in their window or on their lawn? Design a new bumper sticker or some other item that lets us speak with one message?
Do we have it in us to commit to ONE position on a timetable for ending the war? Do we care enough to stay active until the end? Are we willing to sacrifice? Do we have enough faith in our collective power? There`s a big difference between posting an occasional anti-war opinion and saying....I`m going to stay in this thing and fight with everything I have until I help bring the war to a screeching halt.
I`m convinced we can do this. What convinced me? Those who have done it before. It begins with one simple decision.
