Are federal contractors required to check immigration status?

Are federal contractors required to check immigration status?
Assuming no national security or defense issues... do contractors/sub-contractors have to ensure that all of their employees working on the project are legal citizens or at least in this country legally?

Any state legislation that requires the same?
