WASHINGTON - The meeting between President Bush and Chinese President
Hu Jintao began with a gaffe Thursday when an announcer referred to China by the formal name of Taiwan, which China considers a rebellious province.

As Bush and Hu stood at attention outside the White House, an announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of the Republic of China, followed by the national anthem of the United States of America."

"Republic of China" is the formal name of the island 100 miles off the Chinese mainland. China is known formally as the People's Republic of China.

Taiwan is a most delicate issue for China. Beijing claims sovereignty over the self-governing island, which split from the mainland in 1949 as civil war ended on the mainland.

1. I'm telling you -
NO ONE can screw up an event like George Bush. No one.

There are some real interesting implications in this Court Jester show today. I believe there's very little management going on here. Now of course we know Bush isn't. But there's something strangely absent about protocol....decorum...planning.

And they didn't even have dinner for Mr. Hu. They just served him a lunch, and off he went. Unbelievable for our biggest creditor.

Remember last year? Cheney went to a memorial service in Europe. He went wearing a ski parka with white fur. He looked like an idiot. All the other Europeans were elegant: they wore black wool coats and dressed properly for the occasion.

I've noticed other events, too. There seems to be something strangely amiss in Washington.

Bush is the rootinest tootinest rowdy rebel that every redneck would like to have beer with.

6. Who is in charge of White House protocol?
Getting the national anthem of the Peoples' Republic correct is not rocket science... How incompetent can you get?

Must have been the decision of the same person who dressed Cheney for the solemn memorial at Auschwitz....
