December 17
December 17, 1760 - Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man and fought with the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, was born in Massachusetts. After participating in several skirmishes with British forces and being wounded, her gender was discovered and she was discharged from the army. She went on to speak publicly about her experiences, becoming perhaps the first woman to lecture professionally in the United States.
