Experimental stages in Israel and other countries under way, it could come to the USA by 2012 if the US government supported the idea.

1. The guy from Forbes is misinformed or lying about coal generated energy being more CO2
and energy intensive than internal combustion engines.

2. so what
he is right that we don't want to use coal as the means to fuel our vehicles...

powering our grid in clean, sustainable ways is just as important as addressing transportation energy.

coal gives us every year about 4 TW of energy globally, oil 5 TW, ie. 20% more, yet carbon emissions are the same at about 3 bn metric tons. Oil is far more efficient & clean fuel than coal. However I am hoping that the US will step up wind and solar and its grid will be much more renewable by 2015-20 when this will start to become an issue.

existing grid sufficient to power electric car economy

"For the United States as a whole, 84% of U.S. cars, pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) could be supported by the existing infrastructure, although the local percentages vary by region. Using the light duty vehicle fleet (LDV) classification, that includes cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans, the technical potential is 73%."
