For those following the fact that Apple has not just dropped support for Flash in it's new iPad but blocked it entirely - while still saying the iPad is the best way to experience the world wide web, you'll be interested to see Adobe and many other companies are beginning to see this as a filtering of freedom of choice of information on the net. Some note it would be the equivalent of a computer manufacturer not allowing others to offer a competing web browser for their computer hardware (sound familiar? anti-trust echoes of what Microsoft was not allowed to do when they were blocking Netscape from being installed on their systems? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft)


If you think this is just a simple matter of one product with different options, think again. Talk is there of making this product mandatory in schools. So with that, should it really be restricting content or how that legal content can be delivered? Will Steve Jobs restrict computer browsers in the future so they cannot run Flash as well? Is this where things are heading?

18. BINGO -- It's time the world moved to HTLM5 and dump Flash.

Flash is a CPU hog and seriously buggy and a conssitent security hole..its time the world dropped this bandaid and finally move to html5....its the proper next step.

If this works out the way it does, and all that needs to happen is Apple to just continue to resist Flash, then most sites will have a HTML5 version on their site soon and ultimately Flash, like RealPlayer, will be pushed the wayside and forgotten over time.

Flash has to die, like SilverLight....and i never thought it could be possible even now that HTML has the ability to do anything flash does, until Apple became the juggernaught to insist flash's death. Apple and its mamoth shares are the only way to kill Flash.

2. Adobe has pretty much trashed the entire Macromedia suite

They've taken a defacto standard (flash) and turned it into something hideous. Their implementation (read: bastardization of java) of the new ActionScript is horrendously lame, albeit more powerful, they seem to have taken the worst aspects of java and their shockwave scripting language and turned it into a nightmare.

Sadly, the same thing goes for Dreamweaver and Fireworks. :(

You didn't state that you wanted someone to discuss the product features or potential uses. You'd evaluated it, you said you didn't think it was very interesting to you. Fair enough. Don't buy one. In fact, don't buy two of them.

And you just said don't buy one. I was hoping that someone would provide info themselves on why they are buying or why it is not of value.

Before I buy something I want to know as much as possible knowing that it has the features I want and more importantly is not buying a useless merchandise.

My verdict is that, while it has compromises and drawbacks, the iPad can indeed replace a laptop for most data communication, content consumption and even limited content creation, a lot of the time. But it all depends on how you use your computer.

If you’re mainly a Web surfer, note-taker, social-networker and emailer, and a consumer of photos, videos, books, periodicals and music—this could be for you. (Probably the majority of people) If you need to create or edit giant spreadsheets or long documents, or you have elaborate systems for organizing email, or need to perform video chats, the iPad isn’t going to cut it as your go-to device. (Probably those that do real work)

The iPad is thinner and lighter than any netbook or laptop I’ve seen. It weighs just 1.5 pounds, and its aluminum and glass body is a mere half-inch thick. It boasts a big, bright color 9.7-inch screen that occupies most of the front. As on all Apple portable devices, the battery is sealed in and nonreplaceable. It has a decent speaker, and even a tiny microphone.

The sad thing about these wonderful devices is that they really have a hard time in the real world, which is full of dust, has solar radiation that is equivalent to a 1000 watt lighbulb per square meter, has a tendency to rain on devices out in the open, and is subject to ambient temperature that range from -60`F to 130`F. Higher in enclosed spaces.

Then there are dirty fingers, styluses that have dirt embedded into the tip, accidents, a visibility issues. Then there are the inevitable facts of Backup operations and the speed that it can be performed. If the amount of data is too big, then where do you store it, or does one always assume the web and your favorite web sites with all your critical information will always be there?

If Apple has solved this, and made a device that can be used for long periods in the rain forest or the Gobi desert, is reliable and has a good backup system, then I'll get one. Until then, I'll just use my pencil and paper and collect data in the field the old fashioned way, instead of sitting in the elements, squinting at a screen in sunlight, and squeegie-ing water from the display.

Owning one of the first iPaq's was eye opening when it actually came to using the device in the field. It was a great way to record meetings, scribble some notes, and do simple calculations, but anything more involved was slower than actually learning how to do it like they did in the old days.. In your head.

I had the opportunity to observe a modern surveyor using "Modern" survey equipment using a ruggedized Pocket PC application. Struggling with tiny screens, crappy input methods, and poorly designed software made it clear that we have a long way to go before these devices are ready for the real world. I estimate that for all the time saved by calculating the angles, 30% of the time was lost to bad inputs, software design issues, and human error due to the small screen. Even the GPS units are incapable of dealing with more than a few trees on the horizon... To use GPS properly, one would have to cut all of the tree's down in order to get a good signal (Survey Quality).

The Corporations are truly working to get people to forget how to do the things that the Egyptians mastered Millenia ago, and waive any power that remains in our brain over to the machines. Of course, nobody bothers to think of the implications of the precision used to build the Pyramids, or the techniques used to mill solid granite flat, with 90` angles and parallel sides in huge hollow boxes. Those techniques have been lost for ages.

First of all, a tablet is just cool. But of course that's personal preference and you may not share that sentiment.

There have been tablets out for years, but they always relied on an existing operating system (usually Windows) that wasn't optimized for a touch screen interface. So they all kind of sucked. Now this iPad promises to be much more natural to use because it's using the iPhone OS which was designed to be used with a touchscreen.

It will be interesting to see if they catch on. Of course this has already inspired a slew of imitations so if you're not Apple rich you can wait a little while and get one of the competitors that will probably run on some version of Google Android and be more affordable.

And if history is correct they will be better and more functional but not have near the market share.

I for one will not own an Apple product. Once you look at how they are made in sweatshops in China, I am not sure how any liberal or progressive could.

I am glad that Apple is fighting the near monopoly of Flash. And Adobe has done this to themselves, they have poorly supported Flash on the Mac for years. NOW they are working the bugs out and dealing with the resource hogging issues of Flash on a Mac. See what some competition will do. Still it's too little, too late, rather see Flash go away. Apple does not won html5, unlike Adobe owning Flash.

Who know's, maybe Microsoft made Steve Jobs a better deal on licensing for the Silverlight platform.

It's amusing that the Adobe people are so outraged about all of this. I would be too, after shelling out thousands of dollars for overbloated Creative Suites that are the norm from Adobe these days.

I'm sure glad I got out of the Industry years ago. It's so nice to be have the knowledge to know that the new way to write "Hello World" is not necessary or even more productive. It's just this years new model of the Edsel, all based on marketing hype.
